Pinging host name display FQDN Q: We are running a Windows 2003 server as Domain Controller. In some XP computers, when we ping a computer host name for example ping pc1, it displays the FQDN, pc1.chicagotech.net. However, in other XP computers, it displays host NetBIOS name only, pc1. Why? A: The Primary DNS suffix is used in DNS name registration and DNS name resolution. With the DNS suffix, you can resolve the computer name to FQDN automatically. In this case, if you have correct Primary DNS suffix on the computer, pinging a computer will display FQDN. Otherwise, it will display the computer name only. Related Topics
