Chicago Area Laptop for rent: $35 per day plus $10 for additional day
rental

I can save a new file but can’t modify an existing file

Symptoms: You have a folder called Accounting in the server and all members of the Accounting group can access it. They can save a new file in the folder but can’t modify those existing files. Those existing files are read only.

When you check the folder permission on the Security tab, the Accounting group has read and write rights and Allow inheritable permission from parent to propagate to this object is checked. However, if you check the existing files permission, the Accounting group is not there and Everyone group is there with read only.

Causes: 1. those existing files may be copied from a workstation.

2. Some one restores those files using a backup.

Resolution: Remove the Accounting group and re-add it with modify permission.
