Troubleshooting Computer Browsing over WAN

Situation: You just connected two offices located in the different cities. There is one domain controller with DNS and WINS in each office. Every thing works fine except browsing on My Network Places.

Problem: When trying to browse the domain on My Network Places, you may receive “… is not accessible”.

Troubleshooting:

  1. We can ping remote computer.
  2. We can map the remote server shared folders.
  3. The DNS looks good using nslookup to check it.
  4. We receive system Error 53 when using net view \\remotepc. That tells us this is Master Browser and WINS issue.

Analysis and resolution: When each DC with WINS starts, it should register the [1b] and [20] for the DC with its WINS server and the remote site WINS server. If not, you may need to check the WINS settings or replicate the WINS database manually.
