The Computer Browser service does not start

Event ID 7024 - The Computer Browser service terminated with service-specific error 2550 (0x9F6).

The Computer Browser service terminated with the following error: This operation returned because the timeout period expired

The Computer Browser service on local computer started and stopped

Symptoms: 1. Your computer has the Event ID 7024 logged with this message: "The Computer Browser service terminated with service-specific error 2550 (0x9F6)". or "The Computer Browser service terminated with the following error: This operation returned because the timeout period expired".

2. The Computer Browser service is not running on the computer. When you try to start the Computer Browser service, you receive “The Computer Browser service on local computer started and stopped”

Cause: If security software or firewall blocks file and printer sharing and ports for file and printer sharing, you may not be able to start the Computer Browser service.

Resolutions: 1. Make sure the dependencies such as Server and Workstation services are running.

2. Make sure you enable File and Printer Sharing on the firewall.

3. Make sure no security software blocks these ports: TCP 139, TCP 445, UDP 137 and UDP 138.

4. This error is the result of setting MaintainServerList=No in the registry while still having the Computer Browser service active.
