Troubleshooting FrontPage Hit Counter issues.

Q: My company does hosting, and we have a client who pretty much resells our hosting, and does web design. frontpage is used, and every hit counter on every page that's attempted stays stuck on 1. The code is like so -

<!--webbot bot="hitcounter" u-custom i-digits="0" i-image="0" PREVIEW="&lt;strong&gt;[hit counter]&lt;/strong&gt;" i-resetvalue="1000" startspan --><img src="_vti_bin/fpcount.exe/?Page=Default.htm¦Image=0" alt="hit counter"><!--webbot bot="hitcounter" endspan i-checksum="13929" -->

Anyone can shed some light on why that would be stuck on one? Our problem, her problem, what? Any illumination on the subject will be much appreciated.

A: Update - found the answer. Under the _private directory wherever the site is on the server, you need to set permissions for IUSER_<machine> to be allowed to write to those files, such as default.htm.cnt, or whatever page has the counter on it, and this problem is solved.

Its been a long time but, if I remember right, I had to delete it from the site and then reinsert. I don't recommend them.

Bob Lin (MS-MVP): You may have three options to fix this issue.

  1. Just re-do and re-publish the page with Hit Counter.
  2. When asking replace or override existing _private/filename.htm, select Yes.
  3. Publish the _private/filename.htm manually.
