Q & A: network key i used is invalid in Vista wireless

Postby chicagotech » Wed Feb 07, 2007 6:24 pm

Q: I recently installed vista. I have a wireless PCI card installed. I can connect to any unsecured wireless connection, but when i try to connect to my own wireless network, it says the network key i used is invaild. I was previously using XP and the key worked fine. They key also works fine on my powerbook. It is a shared WEP key, 10 digit alphanumeric. I saw a site about the steps you need to take to use a shared wep key in vista, but when i try to enter the key a pop up says it is invalid and
i need to use 5 or 13 characters. Anyone had an idea of what is going on?

A: re-set the router may fix the problem.

I had the same problem. The router is set for WEP 128 bit and I can't get any Vista computer to take the full ASCII password. It always chops it down to 64 bit. My solution is setup WPA which is more secure any way.
