Windows 2008 backup error: Enumeration of the files failed

Postby blin » Sat Oct 18, 2008 9:55 pm

You tried to backup your server by Symantec Backup Exec and Windows system
state backup. But both of them doesn't success. Windows backup turn out the
error "Enumeration of the files failed"

If there is any misunderstanding, please feel free to let me know.

Issue Analysis:
===========
The error message "Enumeration of the files failed" means that backup
service could not successfully check the files need to backup.
This could be caused by:
1. Disk issue
2. Anti-virus software interfere the backup service
3. Other service run improperly.
So, we can isolated them one by one.

Suggestions:
===========
1. Check your disk by "chkdsk /f" to scan your hard disk.
2. Temporarily disable anti-virus software and then run "Windows Backup"
again.
NOTE: a lot of anti-virus software will install their service as system
drivers, you should disable them too.
3. Clean boot and disable all unnecessary service and drivers and then run
"Windows Backup" again. If this work, start them one by one and find which
service actually cause this issue.

After checking the report file you sent to me, your "system status backup"
failure was caused by "Trend Micro Client/server Security Agent".

The analyze is following:
listed file against TMBMSRV.EXE which is "Trend Micro Unauthorized Change
Prevention Service". And this service has the ImagePath set to
"C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\Client Server Security
Agent//\..\BM\TMBMSRV.exe". So sure enough this is pulled down from the
service specification as part of system state backup.
Backup utilizes the VSS to take the snapshot of the volume and then pulls
off the data from the snapshot. As we already know that backup fails trying
to do a Query
on the Directory File with STATUS_INVALID_PARAMETER for the file name ".."
that was part of the path name that we have parsed. I have been working on
finding the root where we obtain this path with a ".." format in the
\\?\GLOBALROOT\Device\HarddiskVolumeShadowCopy2\program files (x86)\trend
micro\client server security agent\..\bm\
<file> path.

Thanks for your help. I found where the "\..\" was in the registry and
removed it so that the path was correct. This fixed the problem.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\TMBMServer. The keys
HomeDir and ImagePath had the invalid path.
