Vista: Local only - no Internet issues

Postby chicagotech » Tue Apr 24, 2007 10:55 am

We have seen more and more cases like this one. Some router as DHCP may have an issue with IPv6, try to disable it and post back with the result. This link talks about wireless, but may help too,

Well, as far as Vista is concerned if DHCP fails it wil auto assign two addresses:
A link-local IPv6 address
An autoconfigured (APIA) IPv4 address

Both addresses are "local". Neither can be routed over the internet.

For wireless adapters not facing the "battery power / AC power" issue, the problem lies in a flag change made during negotiations with the DHCP server in the router. Make the registry edits discussed here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928233

Got the latest firmware for router. also downloaded all updates for the Vaoi
including its wireless switching utility. Still can't figure it out. if i
get connected it will do it on its own and then disconnect anywhere fro a few
minutes to a few hours.. very odd

Thank you for the feedback. If disabling network discovery works, re-configure the network security, for example make sure it is in private location. Please keep us update.

It connects through a Dlink gamer lounge router. I think i may have solved
the problem but i don't like how i is done.

Upon watching the computer network go on and off on its own i noticed that
when it connects to the "local and internet" it turns off the Network
discovery temporarily. I have turned off the network discovery completely
and its been stable for about 4 hours now. Only problem is that i lose
access to seeing the other computers on the network but i can work with that.

I will continue to time it and see if it remains stable when I am at work
today. I have everything underneath Sharing and discovery to off btw now.

We have another cases. One of Vista with wireless can't access the Internet and it shows Local only. These are the steps we troubleshoot.

1. Try another wireless Vista that doesn't work either.
2. Try to connect the Cat 5 cable to the Vista. It still has the ame issue.
3. Tracert 4.2.2.1 command. It shows Destination host unreachable as listed below. That tell us tere is an issue in the router. Reset router fixes the problem.

C:\Users\blin>ping 4.2.2.1

Pinging 4.2.2.1 with 32 bytes of data:

Reply from 192.168.10.1: Destination host unreachable.

thank you for sharing your experience with us. The other solution may be upgrade the NIC driver or router firmware.

My Dell Laptop has a wireless mini-card and is not letting me connect to my netgear wireless router. says that its local only and when i look at ipconfig there is no default gateway. i have deleted winsock and winsock2 and reinstalled but nothing seems to be working. i am computer illiterate so if anyone can spell out some instructions to try, I would greatly appreciate it. thanks so much to anyone that can lend a hand.

1. It could impatible issue. You may try to install altest firmware for the roure and new driver for the NIC.
2. Try to assign static IP address.

Hello Everyone, and Thanks for previously posting your replies to this insane problem.

I registered to post this and tell everyone "my story".
I too have suffered from the problem with Vista "Unidentified Network" , or "Local access Only".

In short, I had to plop in an old NIC from D-link and let Vista install it's drivers before I had access to the internet.

I was running WinXp and never had any issues. I have a Gigabyte GA-M57SLI-S4(rev. 2.0) board with an AMD Black Ed.5000+. I had installed Vista Home Premium 2 years ago to try and didn't have any problems then. I reverted back to WinXp to save my soundcard at the time.

This time around however I installed Vista Ultimate 64-bit. A few things had changed since I last tested Vista. I lost my webcam and gave my soundcard to my son. I got 5.1 surround and started using on-board sound. I changed my B-grade D-link router for a newer TPLink G-grade router. I also toasted my AMD Black Ed. 5000+ and had to upgrade to an AMD triple-core 8650. This involved flashing my BIOS.

Anyway, Vista installed without any problems but I wasn't on-line for some reason. It was able to see my LAN but I could not access my router through any web-browser.
I remember having a similar issue with my daughter's new PC. Her desktop connects wirelessly to the TPLink router.
It only connected once I updated the wireless card drivers. Magic.
I upgraded my on-board NIC port's drivers along with everything else for Vista 64-bit.
Still no magic. Unidentified network. Local Access only.

I googled this on my daughter's PC and would up here.
I tried every possible combination or tip I found in hopes of getting myself on-line.
I am no noob to PC's but this was getting frustrating.

I flashed my new router's firmware. Still no joy.
I thought I had changed a setting in my BIOS when I flashed it. Checked that. Nope - it's on automatic.
My mobo has a neat utility that can diagnose network cable problems. No problems there.
I even tried starting at square one and verifying all physical connections.
I am hardwired to the router with a known good cable. All other PC's see the internet but mine.

I would not get any support from Micro$oft - they wanted $$$. Sorry - not that desperate yet.
I called Gigabyte instead.
That was the shortest support call I ever had.
I stated I had Vista Ultimate 64-bit and the GA-M57SLI-S4 (rev. 2.0) board. The rep stopped me right there.
He stated my mobo was not certified for use with Vista Ultimate. He also pointed out on the website it stated "Certified for Premium". Using Ultimate would lead to unstable operation of hardware and unknown problems.

Ok, not the end of the world. I now know all the hardware is good and I'm not insane.
Opened up the case and installed an old Dlink NIC. Disabled my on-board network connection and Voila !
On-line and updating successfully.

It's interesting in the updates there is one for the Nforce controller (my onboard connection); I should re-enable it to see if it works after the update.

Anyways, Thanks to all those that replied to other posts. I found this site and the people to be very forthcoming, honest, and professional. Saving sanity one user at a time.
