The System Center Updates Publisher has been built on the custom updates framework that was introduced in Systems Management Server 2003 R2. Updates Publisher is a stand-alone tool that enables independent software vendors or line-of-business application developers to import software update catalogs, create and modify software update definitions, export update definitions to catalogs, and publish software updates information to a configured Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) server. By using Updates Publisher to define software updates and publish them to the WSUS server, software updates in Configuration Manager 2007 is able to synchronize the custom updates from the WSUS server database to the site server database, enable client computers to scan for custom update compliance, and provide administrators the ability to deploy the custom updates to client computers.

System Center Updates Publisher (SCUP) is a stand-alone tool that is used in conjunction with Microsoft’s System Center Configuration Manager (SCCM) to allow administrators to more accurately and efficiently install, update, and patch software. Together, SCCM and SCUP are Microsoft’s latest change and configuration management solution. SCCM provides features such as metering, asset intelligence, inventorying, and improved remote client administration. For example, SCCM users can easily determine what products versions are installed including all dot and double dot patches without writing a complicated query.
