NLB and two network adapters problem

Postby guest » Thu Jan 12, 2012 1:20 pm

I faced a problem with my NLB cluster so I need your help. My situation:

I have two 2008R2 servers on Vmware ESX 4.x. Both servers have only one network adapter - each of them. I created NLB cluster from these servers, put it in multicast mode. Everything works as expected and without any problems. Network adapters are in the same subnet.

But things change and I was forced to add second network adapters to each of my servers. These adapters will be in the other network subnet, not in the same subnet as network adapters which have NLB enabled on them. So I took one node of my NLB cluster and added second network adapter. I leaved only ipv4 on it. Client for microsoft networks and file and printer sharing were removed from this adapter. It has only TCP/IP enabled with netbios disabled. I need this adapter to access oracle server which is on the same subnet as this new adapter is. This adapter does not have gateway set as there is no such need.

But here goes the actual problem. When I added this network adapter on one of my servers, I ran NLB manager and saw one bad thing - it says that it can't access other node of my NLB cluster - error code 0x80070721. Error connecting.... I ran NLB manager on this inaccessible node and manager shows that it can access both nodes of NLB cluster and shows them as converged.

I tried to remove this second adapter and right after I removed it - nlb manager showed that it can access another node of my nlb cluster. Can anyone explain why do I face such behavior and how can I fix it? Thanks.

Its looking like that your NLB Manager is not properly communicating with the second node, right after you had added the second Nic and provided diff subnet address. My suggestion is that please remove NLB manager from both the nodes and clear the registry entry also. add two nics on both the server and provide ip address whatever you want to input as a subnet, then after configure NLB manager on both the nodes. pasting some NLB related docs for your reference.
