SCCM Remote Tools installed but "Unable to contact host"

Postby guest » Thu Oct 20, 2011 12:01 pm

Here is the situation:

•Our existing SMS 2003 server failed
•On the new server I installed SCCM 2007
•Reset old server's account so the new server would maintain the same rights
•Extended the schema
•Used the same site code as the old server
•Moved database to dedicated SQL server
•NOT in native mode
•AD Discovery
•Remote Tools enabled, Users assigned

Initially everything was working perfectly and continued to do so as clients were upgraded.

For reasons yet to be determined this is what is going on now.

•Configuration Manager Remote Control reports "Unable to contact host
•Windows Remote assistance says "Your offer to help could not be completed"
•Remote Desktop behaves normally; however, it does not allow for remote interaction.

The clients are Windows XP Pro x86 SP2 running on a Windows 2003 R2 Domain with Microsoft Forefront.

Any help would be greatly appreciated,

check your group policies for the client firewall and see if you have problems.

If you can turn off the firewall and have everything work correctly then you have a GP problem.

Firewall TCP ports 2701, 2702 and port 135 are all opened via group policy; however, when I stopped the firewall service on my target and Remote Tools worked.

I just went in and added UDP ports for 2701, 2702, 137, and 138 as well as TCP ports 3389 and 139 to my firewall exceptions.

What other port am I missing?

As for rc.exe I actually found it at C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Configuration Manager Console\AdminUI\bin\i386 and thank you as well, It is a lot faster to fire off rc.exe and put a computer name than wait for SCCM to query 2000 computers.

What I have on my site is:

* TCP 135 (RPC)

* TCP 2701

* TCP 2702

* Helpsvc

* Remote Assistance

* Remote Desktop

No UDP ports opened at all.

Server team had limited the scope of TCP 2701/2702 via GPO incorrectly... when i changed it to the central site server subnet, everything worked
