Info: Vista can't see XP on network map

Postby chicagotech » Tue Feb 06, 2007 10:04 pm

If you enable Network Map on a Vista computer, computers that are running Windows XP may not appear on the network diagram. To resolve this problem, installs the LLTD Responder component on Windows XP computers. Refer to http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=922120

The information posted above actually does not respond to the "XP can't see Vista network map" issue -- it actually responds to the "Vista can't see XP on network map" issue. Once this patch is installed, the Vista computer is able to see the XP computer and map it on the network map (for reference, on Vista: Start>Network>Network and Sharing Center>View Full Map [link on far right side near network map].

However, even with this patch installed on the XP computer, the XP computer cannot see the Vista computer on the network (even though the Vista can connect to it, save and take files and a printer attached to the XP computer is shared by Vista). Please post how to get the XP computer to be able to see and share the Vista computer drives.

Thank you.

I was able to resolve this today - after a couple of weeks of trying. At first I was trying today to "Add a Network Place" on the XP PC, and using the IP address entry i.e.: \\192.168.1.2. This returned a message that "Windows needs a share" or something grammatically incorrect like that, however this did seem to indicate a sharing problem. So I changed the entry to \\192.168.1.2\C and made sure the Vista C drive was set to Share with full permissions (right click on the drive to set sharing and under the Advanced Permissions button set the permissions). This actually resulted in a "hit" on the drive (XP could contact Vista), however it asked for a login name and password. I used a valid login name and no PW since I have no PW on the Vista PC, however this failed each time. Then after reading a couple of more posts, I went back to the Visa PC and turned off "password protected sharing". Voila, the Vista computer magically appeared on the XP PC's network list (without "adding a network location" even). To get to the password setting, on the Vista PC go to Start>Network>Network and Sharing Center and check all the entries under the Sharing and Discovery heading.

For more information on these settings, go to Start>Help and Support and in the search box type "sharing files with the public folder" then click on the result item with that same name (should be result #1).

I only hope this helps someone else solve this rather ridiculous Vista network problem without spending weeks trying different settings as I did.

More info on this:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/networ ... ta_fp.mspx

Disable password protected sharing

When you disable password protected sharing, the computer sharing the folder does not require a user account or password. Anyone on your network can access the shared folders of the computer (provided the folder was shared for the Guest or Everyone account). This behavior is equivalent to simple file sharing in Windows XP.

Isn't that what we all want, "simple file sharing [as] in Windows XP"?

Thank you for the feedback.

I just changed the subject from "XP can't see Vista on network" to "Vista can't see XP on network map".

the vista macgine and all is good.

In many cases, to fix this issue, reconfigure Firewall or security software. thank you for the update.

Thanks to jon for the workaround of adding network places to force vista and xp to show each other's shared folders in a mapped drive at least.

I had two vista computers and one xp computer on my lan.
After installing the LLTD Responder component on the XP machine, one vista pc could see the shared folders on the xp machine and the xp machine could see that vista pc's shared folders. However vista PC#2 could not see the xp machine, and the xp machine could not see vista PC#2. However when I viewed the network map, vista PC#2 did show the xp machine but it remained unclickable.

I tried a number of things to get the machines to connect properly but to no avail. Then I saw jon's suggestion.

By adding each shared folder as a network place/mapped drive, I now have access to the shares both ways between the xp computer and vista PC#2.

Its silly to have such an obvious bug in the retail version of the OS. Thanks again for posting the workaround.

Edit that .... What I meant to say at the end of that I could see the xp machine name in the full network map on vista PC#2 but that xp machine name was unclickable unlike the other computers in the network map. Otherwise the xp machine and its shares were invisible to vista PC#2.

So added a network place manually (//share/sharefolder) on both computers as jon suggested which worked, adding the folders as a mapped drive.

Its just strange that some vista machines and some xp machines show on one pc but not another.

On the problematic computer, do this command: "net view". Does that list all networking computers?

Net view from command prompt on the xp machine only shows one of the vista machines in the list, along with the xp machine's own name of course.

The 'network' heading's entries in file explorer on the two machines that don't seem to "like" each other (handshaking problem?) continues to be mutually exclusive between those two machines.
Although the xp machine doesn't show up in most of the network areas on the one vista machine with the communication problem, it does show up when you open vista's network map view but is un-clickable.

The 'forced'/manually added shares as mapped drives continue to work between the two.

Another vista machine on the same network communicates with the two computers correctly and shows both in its network list. This computer also appears in the list of each of two computers with the handshaking problem. I'll also add that of course all of the networked pc's show up in my router's status pages. However one vista machine and one xp machine continue to be unable to see each other.

I'd guess it was more of a universal vista/xp general bug if I didn't have another vista pc on the network that is picking up all the shares correctly, and which shows up in the xp machine's network list.

vista issues

Windows cannot create the network map because the network's location type is Public.
In order to view the network map, you must set the network's location type to Private in Network and Sharing Center.

Guys, I am also having the same problem. I did find a workaround in the
link Gloria posted that worked for me. So apparently the computers are
there and can be accessed. It seems to be a problem specifically with
the Network Window. Here's the workaround:
VIEWING SHARES WITHOUT THE NETWORK WINDOW
If the computer that you are trying to access for a shared folder or
printer does not appear in the *Network* window, you can try to view the
shares of the computer by clicking *Start*, typing *\\* * -ComputerName-
*, and then pressing *Enter*.
For example, to view the shares of the computer named BobPC, click
*Start*, type *\\bobpc*, and then press *Enter*.

Has this problem been resolved? I have not tried this kind of problem because I jumped from Windows XP to Windows 7. I have not tried using Vista.
