Restrict to Copy

Postby shujathmsa » Wed May 23, 2007 12:58 am

I want ot share some files and applications on the network so that some to the users can view it and can execute them, but i don't want any of them to copy that applications or files. I want to know if we can set some special permissions so that they can execute or view the files. I want to share the files on any of my Windows 2000 Professional, XP, 2000 or 2003 Server Computers.

There is not in either Windows permissions, or the set of NTFS permissions, a security setting to deny a copy operation.

You can use Group Policy to deny a write to removable devices, such as the floppy drive, CD/DVD Rom drives, and USB devices.

Windows Server 2008 (Longhorn) offers a fairly rich set of Group Policy controls in this regard. See: http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articl ... Part1.html

This is particularly true for Vista clients: http://technet2.microsoft.com/WindowsVi ... x?mfr=true

For Legacy client and server OS versions, you would need to use a custom .ADM file to add similar Group Policy objects. Fortunately, this work has been done for you already: http://www.windowsdevcenter.com/pub/a/w ... olicy.html
