Why not just buy Canon 2x since 1.4 & 2x are same price?

Because Canon dSLR cameras are unable to auto focus if the f-number is greater than f5.6. So, if you have a lens that's f4 and you use the 1.4 extender, then the result is f5.6 and auto focus still work. If you have the same lens that's f4 and you use the 2x extender, then the result is now f8 and auto focus will not work. The only time this is not true is if you're using the Canon 1DX camera body but since most people use the 5DMII or 5DMIII or the crop-sensor bodies, and lenses that typically have f4 in the lens (as do most Canon zooms), then the 1.4 extender is the best solution. I can say that on my 5DMII with my 300mm f4 L lens, the 1.4 extender is a perfect match (and it works perfectly with my 135mm f2 L lens as well).
