Vista common issue - can see but access

Postby chicagotech » Sat Mar 03, 2007 3:28 pm

Thank you for the feedback. Forgetting to assign permission in Secure Tab is the common issue. When enabling sharing a root drive, by default, it assigns every one read only. So, the common issues sharing are 1) you may be able to see it but access. 2) you may be able to open it but modify.

We may have different options to fix it.

1. Enable guest account that is not recommended for the security reason.
2. Assign everyone full rights in the Security tab that is no secure too.
3. Create the identical username in all home network computers.
4. More secure way is assigning users necessary rights to the shared folders based on their needs.
5. Or check this link, Can’t access NAS,MAC, Linux, Samba and Win98
http://www.chicagotech.net/netforums/vi ... .php?t=460.
6. More important, make sure share permissions must match the folder security for access to a share.

Good luck!

Found the problem and fixed it. Almost too embarassing to admit. Hadn't
checked the security tab on C drive to enable the all user's permissions.
DUH!

Thank you so very much for your info and link.

Under "Folder Security and Share Permissions" it was the words "... will be
using the Guest account, which is not a member of the Users group." that
helped us a lot! We added a Guest acccount to the "Group and user names" in
the Security tab of the Properties of each shared drive on the Vista computer
and that did the job!
Now we can access all shared drives and folders in the Vista computer from
all the XP Home computers in our network.

Again many, many thanks for your help!!!

Sigrid

One of the 5 computers in our Home Network got upgraded to Vista Ultimate
64-bit.
It it possible from this "new" computer to go into all drives/folders on all
the other computers in the Network.
The other computers are able to see the new Vista computer and the shared
drives as well as the shared "Public" drive. But we can only get into the
Public folder and it's sub-folders. As soon as we click on one of the other
shared drives on the Vista computer (drives D, E and F) we get the message
"... is not accessable. You might not have permission to use this network
resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have
access permissions. Access is denied."
We've tried to turn off the Firewall - but without avail.
There are checkmarks at the LLTD in the Local Area Connection Properties.

We can work with the network from the Vista computer but not vice versa.
We have no problems with the network within the other computers running on
XP - they're still accessable and everything works smooth.

Any idea or help would be highly appreaciated.
Many thanks in advance.
Sigrid

Thank you for the feedback. As the post mentioned, it is not recommended to enable Guest account. it is better to create the same username in both computers.

Since enabling guest works, that approve this is security issue. However, we don't recommended to enable guest account, so that you may want to create same username and password on the both computers. This link may help,

OK, here's "A" solution I found in this community, although imho not a very
decent one.

I just added the "guest" account to the list of people who are allowed to
share the folder and files and gave this account all necessary permissions
and now I can access the shared folders.

So much for Vista increased security, or am I wrong? For now, it's the only
solution that works.

Anyway; Thanks for your help, Robert.

I was able to fix the public folder using your advice. Thank you. I have a
second drive on the Vista computer that the XP cannot access. Drive Q:\ is
shared. On the share permissions tab, Everyone has full control. On the
Security Tab it says "Allow Authenticated Users, System, Adminstrators and
Users Full Control. It does not have "Everyone" on the list. If I try to add
a new Group or user name, it won't let me change the location. It is set to
the name of the Vista Computer. Password Protection is not on.

Still not solved

Postby ganeshkulkarni » Tue Apr 01, 2008 4:31 am

Hi,
I have the same problem 'can see (outlook etc. can access the internet) but through browser I can not access the INternet'. I am using vista and access internet over LAN. Initially everything is fine; but after some time, the issue occurs and only restarting the machine helps.

Please help me solve the issue.

This sentence "can access the internet) but through browser I can not access the INternet" confuses me. Do you have problem to access the Internet or LAN?

Thank you for the tip. FYI, for security reason, we don't recommend to enable guest account.
