SBS 2003 migration to SBS 2008, Exchange 2010

Postby guest » Fri Apr 27, 2012 10:32 pm

My company is in the planning stages of migrating from SBS 2003 R2 (w/Exchange 2003) to SBS 2008 (Exchange 2010) and I had a few questions I haven't been able to get straight answers to. Hope you can help!

First, should we wait until SBS 2008 R2 is released or is it going to be called "Windows Small Business Server Code Name “Aurora” or Windows Small Business Server 7"? Pros and cons in waiting?

Second, will one 64-bit server run both SBS 2008/Aurora/7 and Exchange 2010 okay or should Exchange 2010 be installed on a separate 64- bit server (one DC right now)?

Could I get directed to migration documentation from SBS 2003 R2 w/Exchange 2003 to SBS 2008 w/Exchange 2010?

Sure appreciate the assistance! I just want to do enough research and planning that nothing is left undone when the time comes to order new hardware and software.

First of all, SBS2008 has exchange 2007 on board if you would like exchange 2010 you have to install it on a separte server. The SBS aurora is a version for max 25 users and has exchange in the cloud so no local installation. SBS 7 will be the next normal SBS version and will include Server 2008 R2 and Exchange 2010 SP1. Small business server is designed for a maximum of 75 users so if in your case you need no more users and is designed all functions on the same server only if you will need SQL server they advise to buy SBS premium this includes a license for a second server with SQL on it.

So everything is depend on your wishes.

There are 2 common ways to migrate a sbs server: the microsoft method: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/libr ... 7964(WS.10).aspx
The other way you have to take a look about is the swing method by jeff middleton http://www.sbsmigration.com/
