Computer entry deleted from All Systems... how to restore

Postby chicagotech » Wed Jan 18, 2012 4:04 pm

In a test environment, some computer entries have been deleted from the All Systems collection. The SCCM client is still running on those computers. The discovery mechanism has recreated the computers entries but the information about the SCCM clients is not showing up. IOW, SCCM thinks there is no client installed on those computers.

On the client computers, I tried the Repair button under the Components tab for the Configuration Manager control panel but nothing has changed. I still only have the discovery records for those computers.

Is there a way to force SCCM to recreate the SCCM clients information in All Systems?

I think you can speed it up by forcing all the client actions on the client but eventually it will happen automatically.

Almost a week has gone by now and the SCCM client running on the central site server was still not showing up as being installed.

Through the control panel Configuration Manager, I once more initated the 5 listed actions (I did that last week). I also tweaked the "Heartbeat" settings in the "Discovery Methods" node.

I do not know whether it was the "heartbeat discovery" method or the second firing-up of the client actions, but the SCCM client has finally decided to show itself as being installed on the central site.

I which there was a more expedite and effective method to refresh the true status of an installed client.

To put this to rest you can find a great help page on this exact issue on the following technet page:

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/libr ... 33103.aspx

It states that "If the client record is deleted, for example, as a result of a site maintenance task or if you delete the client from the console, Heartbeat Discovery from an active client re-actives the old database record for the client."

Basically, you would need to have heartbeat discovery enabled and the client with SCCM installed would need to be able to contact the Management Point for the record to be reinstated.

Also, important to note, it states that the heartbeat discovery DOES NOT DISCOVER NEW RESOURCES.

I hope this helps anyone else who may need it. It's odd I was just looking into heartbeat today on Technet and decided to check another post on here. After reading that post I checked the Related Topics section and this was the first one in the list. Big Brother Microsoft knows all.....

Short answer: Heartbeat discovery and a Inventory resync will bring you clients back into the console. As the others are saying, don't go the restore path. This post explains how you can monitor that clients are being added to the database - http://blog.coretech.dk/kea/ups-i-delet ... r-console/
