Windows 2008 backup has failed with Event ID 517

Postby guest » Thu Apr 14, 2011 6:42 pm

I have Hyper-v enabled on windows 2008 R2 that hosts two VMx. When I use Windows backup to backup the VM, I get this event:

Log Name: Application

Source: Microsoft-Windows-Backup

Date: 3/2/2011 12:03:19 PM

Event ID: 517

Task Category: None

Level: Error

Keywords:

User: SYSTEM

Computer: DMZHPV3

Description:

The backup operation that started at '‎2011‎-‎03‎-‎02T18:02:04.369392800Z' has failed with following error code '2155348041' (None of the source volumes were backed up.). Please review the event details for a solution, and then rerun the backup operation once the issue is resolved.

What could be the problem?

after much research, before we continue, could you please help us verify some information? thanks

1. Can you use the "Windows Server backup" to backup other files or folders? Will the problem also happen?
Here, please try to backup some files in the same partition as where the VM is located.
And please also try to backup some files in a different partition.

2. Have you enabled backup for Hyper-v, according to the following article?
How to back up Hyper-V virtual machines from the parent partition on a Windows Server 2008-based computer by using Windows Server Backup
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/958662

3. Does this problem happen to all the VMs?

4. Have you installed Integration Services inside the VM? Please only test the backup on a VM which supports Integration Services, like Win2003 or Win2008/R2.

5. Please be sure that there is enough free space in the partition where the VM is located.
And, please also be sure that there is enough free space in the partitions of the VM.

Please also help get a mps report of the host to upload:
a) Please download appropriate MPS Reporting Tool from the following link:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/deta ... c79b7306c0
NOTE: The link may be truncated when you read the E-mail. Be sure to include all text between '(' and ')' when navigating to the download location.
b) Launch the mpsreports_x64.exe (or mpsreports_x86.exe) on this computer.
c) Select run on this computer.
d) Check on the General, Internet and Networking, Business Networks, Server Components options.
e) Generate the report to the location you would like to with the name computername_MPSReport.cab by default.

In our case, we are unable to back up with the event error 517 in Windows Server 2012 R2. Here are how we fix it.

Before addressing this issue, I would like to suggest you perform the following steps to narrow down this issue.

======================

1. Temporarily uninstall anti-virus if any.

2. Update volsnap.sys file version.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2929869/en-us

3. Install the latest hotfix for Windows Server 2012 R2: KB2919355 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2919355

Also make sure that we have installed all the updates in Windows Update.

4. Can we perform a backup using “wbadmin start backup” command line? Does it work?

In our case, I restart cryptsvc fixing the problem:
net stop cryptsvc
net start cryptsvc

Or check this link:
