Info: RDC 6.0 offers some new features

Postby blin » Sun Jan 07, 2007 11:43 pm

Remote Desktop Connection 6.0 offers some new Terminal Services features. These features are introduced in Windows Vista and in the Microsoft Windows Server Code Name “Longhorn" operating system.

1. Network Level Authentication
1) It requires fewer remote computer resources at first because remote computer uses a limited number of resources before it authenticates the user.
2) It provide better security by reducing the risk of denial of service attacks.
3) It uses remote computer authentication. This helps protect users from connecting to remote computers that are set up for malicious purposes.

2. Server authentication
With the RDC v6. server authentication verifies that you are connecting to the correct remote computer or server. This security measure helps prevent you from connecting to a different computer or server than you intend to connect to. This also prevents you from unintentionally exposing confidential information.

3. Resource redirection
The Remote Desktop Connection 6.0 client update helps you redirect Plug and Play devices that support redirection.

4. TS Gateway servers
A TS Gateway server is a type of gateway that enables authorized users to connect to remote computers on a corporate network. TS Gateway uses the Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) together with the HTTPS protocol to help create a more secure, encrypted connection without using VPN. The TS Gateway server uses port 443 to transmits data through a Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) tunnel.

5. Terminal Services Remote Programs
Remote Programs are a feature of Windows Server Terminal Services that lets client computers connect to a remote computer and use programs that are installed on it.

6. Monitor spanning
RDC V6 supports high-resolution displays that can be spanned across multiple monitors. The total resolution on all monitors must be under 4096 x 2048 pixels and the monitors must have the same resolution. Additionally, the monitors must be aligned side-by-side. To have the desktop of the remote computer span multiple monitors, type Mstsc /span at a command prompt.

7. Visual improvements
Remote Desktop Connection now supports 32-bit color and font smoothing.

Note: you enable most above features in Options.

me either I havent use it before
OK look at this case
company distribution is a whole sale distributor for variety of products. its customers are retail stores that currently dial into aserver to place the order. the dial-in server is domain member, and all retail stores are authenticated using domain accounts.Their user accounts are shortened versions of the store name, and their password are set to their customer account numbers.Account numbers are aletter followed by fiver numbers. Password are set to never expire. The dial-in aerver is configured to support all authentication protocols. A customer's password was recently discovered by an attacker and the attacker gained access to the company network. You have been asked to mitigate to possibility of such an attack happening at leter time.
based on the case:

@ Assuming that all customers use windows 2000 professional or later, which remote access authentication protocols should you disable?
@ Which protocol would you need to enable to support linux client without changing the credentials used?
@ some customers have requested the ability to access the server using their broadband internet connections. How can you support this functionality?
@ what additional restriction should you place on the remote access server?
@ what additional step should you take to mitigate the risk of a dictionary attack?
do you have any idea  about
thanks for your time
regards moony
