Vista and XP Networking Unable to copy files

Postby eipnvn » Thu Apr 12, 2007 10:04 am

I've been unsuccessfully trying to get my network up and running between my xp and vista machine and have come to the end of my rope. Both the vista machine and the xp machine can see each other, I can access files on each of the machines, edit files, and I can even delete files over the network - the only thing I cannot do is copy files - no matter what size the files are. I'm trying to copy from the vista machine to the xp machine. I get the message that it is calculating the time and then that there is a problem accessing the file (it gives the path to the file on the vista machine) and then tells me to make sure I am connected to the network and to try again. Any ideas? I'm at my wits end. Thanks so much!

I've tried everything but mapping a network drive. The strangest thing is that when I copy or xcopy (robocopy just hangs at 0%) There is a long pause and an eventual error about the file not being available on the network, but it does copy the file - in part. These are simple text files I am copying and while the file's size remains correct, when I view the file, only the very first part of the file is there, the rest is blank. I've never seen anything like this before. When mapping a network drive, how do I get the drive to show up on the other machines?

First share the fodler you want to copy. In other computer, use this command "net use h: \\remotepcname\sharedname". Please post back with the result.

I finally got this to work and it really makes no sense to me. I mapped the network drive - thank you for the help - and then had to turn network discovery off. Once network discovery was off I could copy just fine, I can't see the other computer on the network, but I can copy files... go figure.
