No printer list shows in the Directory

Postby chicagotech » Fri Oct 24, 2008 9:45 pm

We created a networking printer on the windows 2003 printer server. When we go to add it using Find Printers feature, it doesn't show up. However, we can see it if using net view \\priterservername and we can add it if using this command: \\printerservername\printername.

List in the directory is checked. Any ideas why?

Problem Analysis:
==================================
Based on my research, this issue can occur if one of the following is true:

1. the printer is not published to AD correctly.
2. Printer spooler service on domain controller does not get the printer
list correctly.

Note: when you try to find printers in AD, the computer will try to bind
to a Domain controller and send search request to find the printers. Thus,
if the printer information is not stored in AD, you cannot find it in find
printer feature.

Troubleshooting Plan:
==================================

Suggestion 1: restart printer spooler service
======
1. Please restart printer spooler service on Printer server.
2. Please restart Printer spooler service on domain controller.

Suggestion 2: find computer object for printer server:
======
1. Open Active directory users and computers console on a domain controller.
2. please make sure you can find the printer server computer object there.

Note: the printer information is usually stored on computer object.

Suggestion 3: check domain replication:
======
1. please logon domain controller, open command prompt, run this command:

Repadmin /showreps

2. please make sure replication is working correctly.

In our case, restarting printer spooler in the printer server doesn't work. We need to restart the DC printer spooler.
