Data transfer is slow on Dell R720 running windows 2012 R2

Postby blin » Tue Jan 27, 2015 5:31 pm

We have a new Dell R720 server running Windows 2012 R2. This server is running Hyper-v only and no other software such as anti-virus. When we copy a vhd file from windows 2008 R2, the speed is 300KB/S. It takes over 20 hours to copy the 42Gb file. If I copy the same file to my desktop, the speed is 30GB/s and it takes only 2 hours.

I have done some research and did these:

1. Upgraded NIC Driver.

2. Disabled WMQ - doesn't fix the problem.

3. Disabled Receive-Side Scaling - that helps and the speed can go up to 1MB/S

4. Disabled Chimney Offload - that doesn't help.

5. Disabled Receive Window Auto-Tuning - that doesn't help.

6. Mandatory SMB signing has been disabled.

Any other suggestions we can improve the data transfer speed?

I fixed the slow problem by installing latest NIC drive on Windows 2008 R2. The speed is about 30MB/S.

However, we still have the slow problem if we are on Windows 2012 R2 and copy a file from local drive to the Windows 2008 R2. In other words, only if we are in Windows 2012 R2 and copy the file from windows 2008 R2 mapping drive to the local drive, the speed is fast.

It is recommended to use robcopy to transfer large data.
