Outlook: messaging interfaces have returned an unknown error

Postby guest » Tue Jun 05, 2012 2:55 pm

We have 4 offices each running Exchange 2007 and just upgraded 2 of the offices to Office 2010. One Office had no problem but in the other office all staff are receiving this error whenever they reply to an email or use a nickname email address that has <>'s AND the email address is external to our company. Have looked at other solutions about new profile and mailbox repair and have tried these solutions but the problem is not resolved. If they type in the email address the message will send (provided they have deleted the nickname entry with the <>'s). Our internal email addresses have <>'s around them in the nickname file and they work just fine but nothing external for just this office. Some users are still on Outlook 2007 in this problem office and they never see this error even though they are using the same Exchange 2007 server. It seems to be related just to Outlook 2010 not liking external email addresses with the <>'s.

Is there an Exchange 2007 diagnostic log I can turn on to see if there are errors being generated when the client hits the Send button? Thanks.

Resolved! Shutdown Outlook 2010. In Control Panel, mail, Profiles, delete any unneeded profiles. In Account Settings, E-mail and select the Exchange Account. Change, Server Settings, delete the server name and the User Name. Reenter the server name and part of the user name and hit Check Name to have Exchange resolve the user's account. Click on Next. Close the Email Accounts.

Having Exchange resolve the user's name again seems to break Outlook Search, so need to reindex again. Start Outlook 2010, Contacts, click in the Search field. In the Search tab, Search Tools, Search Options, Indexing Options, Advanced, Rebuild.

Now able to reply and send to external email addresses, even though they have <>'s in the nickname file. This also resolved a problem with Sender Headshot pictures not appearing in emails, after resolving the user name again and restarting Outlook the Sender headshots are now appearing.

Still have a problem trying to expand internal Distribution Lists that have <>'s around the name of the DL, but we're just deleting them from the nickname file and then adding them back in as we use them and the new nickname entries are working fine.

Try a new Outlook profile.

Here are the detailed steps on how to create a new profile to test this issue

==============

1. Exit Outlook.

2. Go to Start > Control Panel, click or double-click Mail.

3. Click Show Profiles. Choose Prompt for a profile to be used.

4. Click Add.

5. Type a name for the profile, and then click OK.

6. Highlight the profile, and choose Properties. Then Email Accounts.., add your email account in the profile.

7. Start Outlook, and choose this new profile.
