Outlook receives "Security Certificate is Invalid...." error

Postby guest » Fri Mar 30, 2012 10:06 pm

We are running a SBS (2008) and are having problems with our Outlook connecting to our Exchange server. It comes up and asks for the username/password and will NOT take it no matter what. We CAN hit "Cancel" and it will come on up to the next screen which is a "Security Alert". The only error we get is the last mark stating: "The name on the security certificate is invalid or does not match the name on the site". After we hit "yes" to proceed, it will operate, but comes up to ask us for our username/password. Very odd.

Here's a brief history on how this problem came to be. We were outsourcing our server management on a part-time basis to a techie. Then we experienced a hard drive failure. Once he recreated the server, he made one change (and this might be the root of our problem). He changed our mail name from: mail.internet_address.com to: remote.internet_address.com. Ever since then, we've had this error. Oh..the techie isn't around any more (fun times for us). Anyway, this problem is happening INHOUSE on our local LAN (not even going out to the Internet world).

We have done some research and it looks like it's a certificate issue. We just aren't sure how to resolve the problem. Should we kill all our existing certificates and create a new one then import it into our Outlook? Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!

For the certificate issue see:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/940726
Security warning when you start Outlook 2007 and then connect to a mailbox that is hosted on a server that is running Exchange Server 2007 or Exchange Server 2010: "The name of the security certificate is invalid or does not match the name of the site"

Also: see this thread and ensure the SBS Exchange piece is updated to the latest SP and rollup:
