Outlook recently typed addresses gone

Postby chicagotech » Thu Feb 25, 2010 4:36 pm

Situation: we just replace a user’s PC. The user noticed that in her new Outlook profile all the addresses that she would begin to type and would auto fill for her were gone. We told her that they would regenerate themselves as she used it and the Global address list could be used, however, she relied on it heavily to email outside contacts.

Resolution: After doing a quick search on the net we found that all you need to do is copy the HIDDEN file outlook.nk2 to the users’ application folder under Microsoft and then Outlook (also hidden folders).

For Outlook 2010 running under Windows 7

According to some reading (and local machine searching), Outlook 2010 no longer uses .NK2 to store autocomplete email address. From what I have read, these are stored in a folder called Suggested Contacts. I just reinstalled Windows (will explain why later this week) and would really like to bring over the list of suggested contacts. Anyone have any ideas how to do this?

Your .NK2 file will be imported into suggested contacts when you upgrade to Outlook 2010.

edit: I just realised that you have reinstalled Windows. Have you also reinstalled Office 2007 yet?

You are correct! I assumed that something had to be done because there was nothing showing in the Suggested Contacts folder. However, when I started typing an email address, it did autocomplete.

Easy way to get AutoComplete to work in Outlook 2010:
1. Create new Email Message
2. Add ALL your contacts in the To: box
3. Close and discard the new Email Message.

Test:
1. Create new EMail Message
2. Type any letter of known email addresses in your Contacts list...see, tokd you so!.

Your solution works fine until you close Outlook. When you reopen..doesn't work anymore. Any idea how to make the changes stick?

I can't get Outlook 2010 auto complete e-mail addresses to remain from session to session. Auto complete is removed every time I start Outlook again. I can put them in every session by dragging all my contacts to the inbox and pressing control + K to initiate auto complete for all my addresses, but once I close down Outlook and restart again they are not there and I have to physically type the address in which is becoming a bit of a drag. As you can see from the following image I have auto complete selected.

Any help would be appreciated.

For the benefit of anybody else who has this problem I was having trouble getting the auto complete e-mail list to remain after the current session. I had used a program called PC tuneup and it obviously emptied my auto complete list and my usual method of dragging all my contacts to the inbox and pressing control K would only work for the current session. In other words when I closed outlook and reopened it the auto complete list was empty. I ended up downloading a little app called nk2view and it works really well, not to mention that it made adding e-mail addresses to the auto complete list very easy.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I actually had the problem recur and using NK2View wouldn't work the second time but I eliminated PC tuneup as the culprit as I hadn't run it a second time. I then downloaded NK2Edit and that rectified the problem. It was brought to my attention that I had corrupted the primary .PST file, emptying the "Suggested Contacts" folder. I did run scanpst.exe located in (c:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office14), several errors were found, repaired and this time the problem hasn't recurred. So it is probable that using NK2edit and scanpst.exe both work.

AutoSuggest uses a cache which contains a list of addresses that you’ve previously used.

A simple method to fill the AutoSuggest cache:-

You can directly fill the list by creating a new message addressed to all your contacts at once. There is no need to actually send this message.

Create a new message.
Press the To… button.
Select the contact list in the right top corner from which you would like to add the contacts from.
Examples; Contacts folder, Global Address List (GAL) or a contacts folder in a Public folder.
Select the first contact.
Scroll all the way down to your last contact.
Hold the SHIFT button on your keyboard while clicking on the last contact to select them all.
Press the To –> button to add them all to the To… field.
Repeat step 3 to 7 if you have contacts in additional lists that you would like to add.
Press OK to close the dialogue and to return to the newly created message.
Close the message and press No when prompted to save changes.
Now when you address a new message the AutoSuggest feature will pop-up again.

I hope this works for you..

Another useful control....

Press the Start button and type autocomplete in the 'Search Programs and Files' box. Next touch and enter the link offered for autocomplete in the panel above.

In the dialogue box select settings for Autocomplete box, then check or uncheck the items which you wish to autocomplete.

I think it might be to do with AutoSuggest not AutoComplete.

It's worth a try.

To have the autocomplete working its magic :
Create a new email.
Select all your contacts (from TO
-- the trick: Disconnect your Internet connection..
Send the email
(because you don't have internet access, the email is going to sit on the Outgoing folder)
Close Outlook
Open Outlook
delete the email that was sitting on the Outgoing folder
Close outlook
Get the internet connection active again
Back to Outlook and Voila!!! The autocomplete is working for all your contacts
