Just to add some more information. I just downloaded a Norton Update
from the Internet so there is clearly an Internet connection but
Internet Explorer is completely clueless about it. I would install
Mozilla but I can't make a connection to do it.

Hi
As far as I know almost all computer's audio hardware uses one power output.
I.e the Speakers and the Headset are actually the same output (with some
load adjustment). As a result you can not separate the two.

Cheers for the answer.
I did manage to get the music player playing through speakers and Skype on
the headset at the same time by connecting the headset and restarting Skype
while music was already playing.
When I shut down the music player and started it again, of course it was on
the headset.
But the check did show that they can both run separately. I just need to
figure out how to maintain the separation.

Don't disable security...
Create a new wireless encryption key, etc and add the new PC. I recommend
using Windows Connect Now (WCN) and saving off the wireless configuration on
a flash drive. You can then quite easily add new clients. Links here...
http://theillustratednetwork.mvps.org/LAN/SoHoWirelessSecurity.html
Remember the new wireless encryption key needs to be changed on your router
(check your users manual for help with that) and all wireless clients. The
encryption type (ie. WPA2/WPA) and key need to match on all the clients and
the router.

I have XP.
Security of your wifi network is configured on your router.
To change or disable the encryption key for your wifi network, access
your router's configuration utility using a computer connected to it
with an Ethernet cable. If you changed the username for access to the
router's configuration utility, or set a password for it, you will
either have to enter that userid/password or reset the router to its
defaults using the reset button on the back of the router and then use
the default userid/password.
Read your router's user manual for details.
Note that in many routers, the encryption key may actually be available
in "clear" once you access the appropriate part of the router's
configuration utility, so that you may, in fact, not have to change it
(which will save you the effort of re-configuring all of the other
computers that access your network).

Hi
Do not use the 802.11x configuration, it meant for special servers.
Windows 2000 does not have its own Wireless Manger, you have to use the
original manufacturer utility.
What you describe can be a result of weak signal or environmental electronic
noise.
Make sure that the Wireless Card is not set to Save Power. Try different
channel to neutralize possible noise.

Did you change the name of the SSID on your new router from Linksys

Change the SSID on the router that you own. Wireless cards get confused
when they see the same SSID from two routers.

When I first installed the router (I only have one) I personalized the SSID,
and while running XP or on XP machines currently I have not trouble. But I
will try changing the SSID. It is only when I connect the remote Vista
computer wirelessly that there is a problem. When initiating a wireless
connection it only 'sees' one SSID/source (mine). But once connected to
that
SSID the internet connection fails. A Diagnosis reveals 'multiple'
connections, and suggests deleting or disabling one of the connections.
Looking at the connections there are two; one that is my SSID and one that
says "Unidentifed Network". However if I look at the Properties of the
unidentified network it is in fact the same SSID/signal. Because there is
only one source (router/signal/SSID), if I disable either of the
'connections' that appear it disables/eliminates both of them. When I go
to
reconnect, I see only the SSID (no other connections), so I connect on it and
it doubles up to two connections. Weird.

I did change the router name from Linksys to something else, but there is
only one router. The Linksys router is connected to my primary PC/modem to
provide wireless service to the rest of the house. The remote PC running
Vista connects twice to the same network/same router. This is after
selecting the single available network/SSID when I initiate the wireless
connection on the remote PC. Before installing Vista (when the remote PC
was
running XP) there was no problem with the same wireless router/connection.
Now when the internet connection fails, you diagnose and it says "there is
more than one wireless connection; delete or disable one of the connections".
But in fact there is only one source, so if I delete or disable that source
(the Linksys router) it eliminates both connections. It's weird.

Okay; tried the remove/delete and reboot - no impact. When I reconnect to
the wireless it connects twice (internet fails to fire, diagnose says "There
is more than one active network connection...etc etc", then when I disable
one they both go down.
Did the cmd prompt: here are the results:

what driver are you using for the wireless? are you using Linksys
drivers and is there Linksys software still on the machine?

Barb:
I disable the connection by going to the Network & Sharing Center, and in
one of the wireless description boxes (below View Status) I hit the
"Disconnect" button. Both connections shut down.
I'm not certain how to determine what driver I am using for wireless. I went
to the Device Manager, Network Adapters, and there are three listed. I
clicked the Linksys Driver (one of the 3) and looked at the Driver Details.
It describes it as "Linksys Wireless-G PCI Netware Adapter with
SpeedBooster". The Driver Provider is Linksys.
When I look under Programs I see "Linksys Wireless G PCI Network Adapter".
Below it are two choices, uninstall and Wireless Monitor. If you hit
Wireless Monitor nothing (apparent) happens.
Thanks for your continued help.

this sounds like you are connected to someone else's insecure
network. if you are using a wired Ethernet connection, you could
disable the wireless or change settings (remove the network named
default and then uncheck automatically connect to no preferred
networks).
if you have your own wireless router, change the name from default
to something else. then configure your security. then configure your
connection.
if you can explain your situation a little more, it would help.

Hi,
Sorry I was a bit vague.
I'm trying to pick up the connection from two places (not my home router):
at work and at a friend's house. I'd also like to be able to pick up a
connection from coffee shops, etc.
Do I need to configure settings differently for each place I'm trying to
connect?
Thanks so much,
Natalie

do you see a little connectoid in the system tray showing available
wireless networks? you need to connect to a network and then
configure. what version of Windows?
at work, ask your IT person or admin to assist you with security and
permissions
at your friends house, ask for the passphrase needed for security
at coffee shops, reboot, connect to wireless and try going to
yahoo.com or similar which should bring up a login page or gateway
page, etc.

Hi,
Yes, I see all the available wireless networks. I am able to "connect" to
the networks at work and my friend's house with strong connections (at least
that's what it says.) However, I'm not able to actually get online.
Both the networks I wish to connect to are "unsecured". Doesn't that mean I
shouldn't have to do any special configurations to connect?
Thanks for your help,
Natalie

Hi,
I think I'm getting somewhere. Now I'm receiving the following message:
"Windows could not finish repairing the problem because the following action
cannot be completed:
Renewing your IP address
For assistance, contact the person who manages your network."
Does this help?

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928233 *may* be the reason you are
seeing this message if you are running Vista. However, you didn't
answer the question as to what version of Windows you are running.
In any case, cann you run a cmd prompt (elevated if Vista) and type
ipconfig /all [enter]
copy the results to the clipboard and paste it all in here

I have a desktop and a laptop both running XP home. I am able to browse
through both computers with no problem and see all the files on each.
However, I am not able to copy files to and from each except for to the C
drive or to the shared files folders. Is there a way to copy and paste
files
from the laptop to the desktop or vise versa into a person folder under my
documents or something like that. More specifically when I'm on the laptop
and want to move something from it to the desktop I go to my network places
select the C drive on my PC, click documents and settings, click folder named
"Leslie". I am unable to paste files into that folder. As far as I
can tell
I have all permissions set to administrator but it tells me that "access
denied. Make sure the file is not full or write protected or not in use".
Something like that. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Hi
Each computer Network capacity is independent so it does not matter which
OS you start with.
However you have to start with the wired computer (
http://www.ezlan.net/faq#onewire ). Once it connects to the Router, and you
have Internet you can attend to the Wireless.
You can find on this site a collection of pages that might help,

Hi
With the computer that has the correct key connect to the Wireless Router
and disable the security.
Disable the security on all your Wireless computers make sure that you can
establish a connection with No security.
Connect again to the Router, configure a new key, and then use the new key
on the Wireless computers.

Hi
May be you would like to clarify how everything is configured, and what is
your goal.
FTP? Client, Server, Inbound Connection, or Outbound?
Usually when one has router there is No need for ICS (ICS is actually a
software Router).

Re: FTP cant connect after ICS

I need ICS because I have my internet connection directly to the computer
that I have the FTP program on. This computer is not a server, just a
normal computer browsing the internet. I simply want an FTP program
running
on this computer to connect for uploads and downloads as usual. I had to run
the network connection wizard so that the router could be configured to work
with this setup. I need the internet connection direct to this computer.
The goal is simply to get the FTP program to connect and do what FTP
programs do. It seems odd that I can connect to the internet in a browser,
but not with the FTP program. I tried several FTP programs. So it must be
something that is blocking FTP.
Any other ideas?

Static IP addressing is worth a try, it fixed my problems.
It's quite simple, just one box to untick or tick to change
from "Let Windows manage my connection" to static
addressing.
ipconfig /all from the wired, more reliable, PC will give
the numbers you need.
Each PC needs the same gateway address, subnet mask,
DNS server address, all that changes is that each PC
needs a unique IP address.
Google for
static ip xp
to get more info.
It's worth doing ipconfig /all on each PC, then you can
compare.

Hi
Make sure that the powersave feature of the Wireless cards is Off (Example,
http://www.ezlan.net/example/powersave.jpg )
Try all the Wireless channels, and choose the one that provides the best
"Speed" (It is Not necessarily the strongest signal,
http://www.ezlan.net/faq.html#signal ).
Make sure that D-link utility and Windows WZC are not running together.

Hi..
Powersave is off on all.
Hmm...well I'm looking for consistency more than speed now...i am only
selecting my SSID but I have connected another unsecure wireless signal i
could see while i was waiting for verizn to turn my DSL on and it seemed to
work ok (I should say that i connected for brief periods to check my mail
then disabled so i am not sure how consistent it was but i think it was ok)
I am not using the WZC i am using the D-Link utility
I also should note that last night all were working but when i returned home
none were ablt get to internet though again signal was good. I had to poer
off router, powere of modem, wait 2o secs or so, power on modem then the
router then everyting worked again...so far.
Not sure why resetting the modem/router works or why i have to do it but it
works but it is a real pain in the....a__!
Thanks for the reply.

That name tends to mean that the Broadcom card is not wireless.
One thing that they might have done is disable the radio. You won't
be able to get the wireless working if the radio is turned off. (Radio
means
wireless transmission).
The fine manual for the wireless card should tell you how to enable the
radio.

Hi
First setup the Ad-Hoc and make sure that it is working. I.e you can
actually communicate between the two computer. Then set up Windows ICS to
Route, and share the Internet.
See few options here, http://www.ezlan.net/DialUp.html

Hi
OS=Operating system. I.e. Windows 2000, XP, Vista, etc.
Most important is to try another computer, to rule out whether it is a
computer problem or a Router problem.
If your computer works directly with the Modem and does not work with Router
it might be Router miscomfiguration or Bad Router.

If XP try Control Panel then Computer Management then
Administrative Tools then Device Manager then right hand
pane Network Devices.
If you have an installed wireless device it should show there.
Note if it's a laptop, wireless devices sometimes are
switched off but (in theory) should still show.
Very unlikely is the situation where you have an
uninstalled or improperly installed wireless device.
In this situation I would expect to see it in Network
Devices with a warning icon, or a message new
hardware found.
If you haven't got a network device you can go for
a wireless adapter. I like USB wireless adapters
since you can move them on the end of the USB
cable to get the best signal.
Cards with aerials can get screened by the case
being between the aerial and the access point.
But it's horses for courses, each has its
advocates.

Which OS?
What are you using to manage the Wireless.
It is Not a DHCP issue. Your Laptop probably stays in a state that it

Hi Jack,
Apologies for not providing that - the laptops are running either XP Pro or
XP Home. The one I am using for troubleshooting is XP Pro.
The locations are 20 miles apart, so there is no choice on the wireless
front - the laptop uses the local router for the wireless service.
It seems that, even if the address lease has expired, the laptop remembers
who the DHCP server was, and specifically asks that router for a new address
- hence my categorizing it as a DHCP issue.
Best regards,
Dave

Hi
How the Laptop is set, Obtain Auto IP and DNS, or Static configuration?
The computer need to obtain an IP from the second Router otherwise it can
not connect and see any thing at all.
What VPN established means? To Routers need functional computer to establish
active VPN unless they are special End Point Router.

Thye laptops are all set with Obtain Auto IP and DNS. I believe that the
problem is caused by XP remembering the IP address of the DHCP server even
through an ipconfig/reset.

The routers are running DD-WRT with OpenVPN. One is configured as the VPN
server, the other as the VPN client. They are set up so that the two
locations are bridged - they appear as a single network. The routers use
DynDNS to keep track of their actual IP addresses. The laptops see only the
internal IP addresses - 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.2 for the routers at
location 1 and location 2 respectively.

Hi
I never encounter such a phenomenon.
If it was my system I would first suspect that it has to do with the DD-WRT
and OpenVPN.
Some of the "Fancy" add On to DD-WRT are not bug clean.
I would first neutralized this setting and see if the same issue occurs with
a regular connection.
Or just try the Laptop with some normal Hotspot at your local Internet Café
and see if it does the same.

Hi Jack,
I caught the action using a sniffer - and it is an MS issue. I'll post
details as a reply to the original post...

Digging into what happens when you do an ipconfig/reset and then an
ipconfig/renew shows the following in the first message sent out on the
ipconfig/renew:
Option: (t=53,l=1) DHCP Message Type = DHCP Discover
Option: (t=116,l=1) DHCP Auto-Configuration
Option: (t=61,l=7) Client identifier
Option: (t=50,l=4) Requested IP Address = 192.168.0.106
Option: (t=12,l=4) Host Name = "Dave"
Option: (t=60,l=8) Vendor class identifier = "MSFT 5.0"
As you can see, the client has remembered the previous IP address (not the
DHCP server address as I originally suspected), and is requesting it again.
So the question becomes, how can I force the laptop to forget it's previous
IP address - given that ipconfig/reset does not do this?

Hi,
Haven't tested this, its just an idea, you could set the ip range for DHCP
on the first router to 192.168.0.1-192.168.0.100 say, and then the range on
the second to 192.168.0.101-192.168.0.255 ?? That way the requested IP wont
be avaliable and it would have to get another one?
As i said, just an idea.

That is very close to what I have set up - router 1 does .100-.149, and
router 2 does .150-.199.
Let's say I'm at location 1 with an IP address of .106. When I go to
location 2 (the lease will expire during the journey), XP asks for .106
again. Router 2 ignores this (as it is out of its address range), but router
1 gets the request over the VPN and responds. Now I have a computer at
location 2 using the router at location 1 - with the associated delays.
The issue I have is that I can't find any way to stop XP from asking for
.106. Temporarily breaking the link between router 1 and router 2 during the
DHCP negotiation is a solution - but it involves breaking the network.

The answer is ipconfig/release followed by a reboot. It seems that the old
IP address is being stored in memory (it's not in the registry or any file
that I could find), so a reboot clears this also.

Did you try first to connect to the Wireless Router (Gateway) with a wired

Hi
RR is a dynamic connetion Not a regular LAN DHCP. It probably do not give
more than one IP.
In any case, the configuration should be.
Modem to WAN port of Router, Access Point to a Regular Port on the Router.
Other computers to regualr ports of the Router, or Wireless.
Access Point configured according to the principles as described here,

Hi
I do not have Vista info readly, but the priciple is similar to WinXP.
If the Wireless card is On, and configured correctly with the drivers, you
would see it in the Device Manger. http://www.ezlan.net/example/dm_ok.jpg
You can get the program mentioned here (it works with Vista
http://www.ezlan.net/infestation#process ), and "Kill" temporally the
processes that relate to the HP Network Assistant.

Nearly all of the wireless routers have ethernet ports as well. Very few
can connect directly to broadband cable or DSL.
However, there is a bit more to creating the network than merely getting the
hardware connected. One problem is that most people left Win98
a long time ago; thus finding knowledgable help can be difficult. I for
one
never had (or needed) a home network when my computers were
running Win98. Thus I have no idea about how to get Win98 connected.

Hi
Wireless Routers have on the LAN side 4 wired ports, and wireless capacity
for many Wireless computers.
Independent from the Internet you can plug the two desktops to the wired
ports, and the Laptop connects wirelessly.
You set the File Sharing on each computer and they would talk one to the
other.
This page has info concerning setting the Network and File Sharing for
Windows98, 2000, and XP. http://www.ezlan.net/Installing.html
The Router also has a WAN port, if a Cable, or DSL Modem is connected to the
WAN port the three computers would connected to the Internet too, otherwise
leave this port open.
The whole thing looks like this, http://www.ezlan.net/network/router.jpg

Hi
Successful Sharing involves some general consideration in Network
settings,http://www.ezlan.net/sharing.html
