Update all IE to same version.
Can be done with IEAK, GP installation policies, logon
scripts etc...

Your total path length allowed is 255 characters the
filename and the folder
paths as well.
You can zip up the offending folder, copy the zip file
to the new location
and unzip it.

Hello N.Cassadine,
Ten days shouldn't be any problem. Check only for your
running part of the
network, that you still have a DNS server and a Global
catalog available
and ofcourse that the clients are configured to use
the DNS server.

[Don't use the terms front-end and back-end in this
context - they mean
something very specific in Exchange.] Normally, you'd
just add this Exchange
server to the existing forest, and mail coming into
the parent company
server destined for your own users, will automatically
be delivered to their
mailboxes.
> However, I don't want to be the same domain,

I don't know what sort of "security reasons"
you refer to, but domains are
not security boundaries, and if you're thinking of
creating an entirely
separate *forest* I think you won't have the kind of
connectivity you *do*
want.
Don't create a child domain - it won't do what you
want, and will overly
complicate matters. A single AD domain, with you in a
separate site/subnet,
and your servers/computers/users in their own OUs, is
going to be much
better overall.

Much depends on what you're worried about securing.
Additionally, what about
the parent company's network standards? Surely they
have some requirements
and policies you have to adhere to -

I don't have to adhere to any standards from the
parent company. The
security that I am concerned with is the parent
company being able to
access our data/pc's/servers, etc. The only thin I
want to be common is
the email. I have to receive email on my network via
the domain
company.com. Other than that I don't have to do
anything, and the parent
companies IT guy is willing to do whatever I want to
try.

OK, then. However, it isn't really clear what degree
of integration you
actually need. A subdomain won't cut it (won't help
you, at any rate). A
trust is probably overkill....and I'm not sure a
one-way trust will cut it.
If all you need is mail, and no AD integration (such
as for the GAL), you
could simply have the parent company route all mail
with an unresolved
recipient in the domain, directly to your server
...and keep the two
networks entirely separate. You might try posting in
m.p.exchange.admin for
more help.

As long as SQL is currently only using domain accounts
and no local service
accounts. It should be OK.
Domain Controllers don't have local accounts - same
issue as WSUS / IIS.

If your user profiles are getting corrupted, it well
might. And having large
profiles without folder redirection increases the odds
of that. Remove that
possibility by using folder redirection and it will at
least help you
isolate the problem (not to mention make it much
easier to recover from it).

Usual reason is a SID has changed somewhere. The user
has a different SID
from the previous time, so Windows ditches their old
profile and creates a
new one.

Yes, for a small/home office you should be fine,
although it isn't
officially supported in a production environment,
AFAIK. Also, you might be
better off with VMWare. . However, you will want far
more RAM than 1GB on
that box. I suggest you post in microsoft.public.windows.server.sbs
for
more expert help ....and perhaps x-post to a virtual
computing group.
Another option would be hosted Exchange...plenty of
companies offer this at
a reasonable cost, including direct push/AUTD for
handhelds. If Outlook
collaboration/WM access is all you want, hosting your
own server ?
may be overkill....remember you will need a good
managed UPS, Exchange aware
antivirus, and a backup device, at minimum, to host
this yourself.

Newguy,
You have to install an image from CD using the Remote
installation services
component in Administrative tools, then it will be
available in the
\\SERVERNAME\REMINST\Admin\i386 folder. Keep in mind
that you have to
install a version of whatever OS you are capturing to
the RIS server before
you capture the image using RIPrep.

if your motherboard is newish it should support
onboard raid, in the
bios. You said it didnt detect so you might need to
buy a raid card,
cost a few $$, just for testing?? I sugguest you
investigate windows
software raid. Performance wont be that good. But if
this is just a
PC maybe you dont need this. A software raid on your
pc wont really
help you, might be a bit faster, or you could mirror,
no faster at
all, but then you have a live backup hard drive. But
that wont help
you if you install some spyware, both drives would
then have the
spyware.
To study in this area, look at some FAQ's on how to do
it on a IBM,
HP, and Dell server. They will have screen shots. Then
just learn
what the different raid types are.
Maybe you can do Pretend Raids in Vmware, have a
look??

Thanks. That helped. I also found out that inside 2003

can go to run and type diskmgmt.msc and from disk
management create different
raid configurations! Thanks.

Be sure you understand the potential problems with
software RAID. If
*ANY* of the drives in the array fail *EVERYTHING* is gone.
If the OS
gets corrupted and has to be reinstalled or repaired
*EVERYTHING* is gone.
I'm not sure what this is going to do for you other
than set you up to
lose everything....

If that key worked with that media before, it will
still work.
First verify you are using the specific key that came
with that media.
Look very closely, O-0, B-8, S-5 and others look
alike.
Have someone else try, sometimes another set of eyes
and fingers can
get it.

Hello Jason,
I post here the mail content also for other to follow
your problem, please
do not email, post every answer here. :-)
Thanks for the reply, but here's the deal:
1. BES = Blackberry Enterprise
Server. To my knowledge Symantec Backup
Exec does not use Java in any way. To be more
specific, we are using BES
4.1.3 currently. Sorry, should have been a bit more
specific in the original
post. We don't currently have a support contract with
RIM, so I'm contacting
T-Mobile (who provided the BES) to see what we can do
with them on the issue.
However, since it appears to be a M$ patch that broke
everything to begin
with, I figured I'd draw on any experience that
someone may have already
had with a similar configuration.
2. APC is in the clear on this one. It's what pointed
out the problem,
but their software works fine, stand alone. With no
other version of the
Java runtime installed, the APC PowerChute software
works flawlessly. It's
when any other version of the runtime is installed,
that the problem appears.
AT THIS POINT. It was co-existing fine with several
other installations
of JRE, about 3 versions of 5, and 2 versions of JRE 6
installed, PRIOR TO
THE M$ UPDATE.
I thought the short was BackupExec. With Blackberry i
have no experience.

Hello Jason,
Nice to hear that you got it.
Again, PLEASE do not email, use the NG, thats for it
is made.
Right on, thanks for replying!
Got it solved. It was one of the updates that broke
the functionality, and
am not sure which one it was. It was a Java conflict,
and the fix was:
1. Uninstall all JRE copies of Java
2. Re-install Blackberry Enterprise
Server 4.1.3 with embedded jre1.5_09
3. Set up depedencies on three Blackberry services
(dispatcher, policy and
sync services) to wait on MSSQL service according to
this KB article:
All is functional once again!

what does this mean in detail?
Exact error messages?
Errors/warnings in the event log?
Did you already try to reinstall the scanner drivers?
Is the scanner connected to the server directly and
will be used from the
servers desktop or is it connected to a client PC?
Also note, that this scanner is no network scanner and
HP only supplies
drivers for consumer Operating Systems, so I still
fail to see the server
context and it may well be, that it doesn't work with
Windows Server 2003
SP2.

so there seems to be a coincidence. But as already
mentioned, Windows Server
2003 is not a supported OS for this scanner. On top
the scanner is no longer
in product lifecycle of HP, so they may not even try
to give driver updates
for XP, forget unsupported OS.
As for the scanner not functioning with SP2, this may
have various reasons:
- a swapped DLL or other system file, where the
scanner was depending from
- a fixed security hole which was also used by the
scanner software
- changed permissions to areas, where the scanner
software wants access to.
Are there any related errors in the event log? You
could try to play around
with process explorer/filemon to find the troublesome
component. Tools can
be found here:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/Utilities/SysinternalsSuite.mspx
Your best and most timesaving option would be instead
to use a system with
Windows XP as the scanner workplace. (I dont think it
is a good idea, to
have not installed the latest service pack on a long
term view.)
Best greetings from Germany

Install another Domain Controller in the SBS domain.
Install another
Exchange Server in the SBS Exchange Organization.
Move the mailboxes to the new exchange server.
decommishin the SBS exchange server and the SBS domain
controller.
Oh, and buy all new licenses.
Or, if you are up to date (SBS2003 R2) you can
purchase Microsoft's
"Transition Pack" and retain your licensing
investments.

This is not possible, unfortunately. You will need to
buy Windows 2003. You
can't demote
SBS (it would be in violation of the agreement and it
will stop working at
all after a few days), nor can you install it as a
member server.

| | Ken,
| | It appears your suggestion will not work. From my
note of 8/15 2:08
PST:
| |
--------------------------------------------------------------------
| | Ken,
| | I have already done most of the suggestions. The
only part that I have
| not
| | done is the following. If you will review the note
section it says to
| remove
| | the device using Device Manager, which can not be
done since the device
| in
| | question is the RAID driver, and this is the only
disk on the system:
| | ----
| | --Riprep images--
| | Create a Sysprep.inf file in the Sysprep folder,
and then add the
| | [Unattended] and OemPnPDriversPath = Driver_Path
entries. You can list
| | multiple paths in this key by separating them with
a semicolon (;) as
| follows:
| | [Unattended]
| | OemPnPDriversPath = Drivers\network
adapter;Drivers\Video
| | UpdateInstalledDrivers = Yes | No
| | Note The %SystemDrive% environment variable is
automatically inserted
| before
| | each of the listed search paths that are
specified.
| |
| | Note If the device has already been recognized by
the operating system
as
| a
| | known or unknown device, you must remove the
device through Device
| Manager
| | before you run Sysprep or the updated drivers are
not installed on
| startup
| | during mini-Setup.

Hi Jeff
There are some solutions, you can use 3-part software
like: Symantec ghost
or Acronis disk director
here is: "get the job done" with ghost
1. Break the mirror on the old Raid 1
2. shut down and remove the Second disk
3. plug on one of the new disks
4. clone the old pri disk to the new disk (ghost let
you select how big to
make the new partitions)
5. remove the old pri disk and replace it with the new
disk from 4
6. reboot on the new disk (if it goes wrong you still
got the old disk from
4 if it does'nt work)
7. shutdown an plug in the new second disk
8. reboot an create a mirror on the second disk

Hello Andre,
Since 2000 theire is not longer a PDC like in NT4, so
the question is, is
your "PDC" the PDCEmulator machine. Since
2000 there are 5 FSMO roles, that
are used.
View the FSMO roles:

I'll give it a try... however, I'm curious... that
document states: "This
issue may occur if the Network Load Balancing service
is referenced as a
component in the startup group of a third-party
service." but it does not
list which "third-party services" are known
to cause the symptom.... do you
know if such list exists somewhere?
Thanks.!

btw, is the "secondary" a DNS server with
the AD intgrated zone as a
Standard Secondary (read only) zone? And is that

use " dnscmd" to document the
configurations;
dnscmd "firstserver" /info >dns1.txt
dnscmd "secondserv" /info>dns2.txt
then post the results.

Your main option is to use Terminal Services.
Otherwise you could consider:
- working locally and backing up to the central site
(but that does not
resolve the problem with shared files)
- Groove peer-to-peer replication of shared files (if
the volume is not
great).
Hope that helps,

Since it would be unusual at best for you to use a
public IP address
directly assigned to the network interface on your
server, I'm not quite
sure what you've been told. I'd have to imagine you
can set up your new
server on the same private network where the existing
webserver sits, using
a different private IP address. When you're building
your server, give it
whatever IP you wish - when you're ready to retire the
old one ?
can change the IP on the new one if you need to.
The public IP address is generally on the other side
of your
router/firewall, has nothing to do with the private IP
of your server, and
you control the inbound traffic via rules in the
firewall which forward
ports to the private IP you wish to use.
Hope this helps....and I also hope this web server is
on an isolated network
segment (DMZ) that doesn't touch your back-office
LAN/servers/computers at
all.

The switch to native mode ONLY prevents replication
between AD DCs and NT
4.0 BDCs in the same domain. Add a new user to an AD
native mode domain with
a NT 4.0 BDC in it and that account will not get
replicated to the NT 4.0
BDC. Since the NT 4.0 BDC only holds a read only copy
of the SAM, there
would be no way to add that user to the NT 4.0 BDC
even using user manager
on the NT 4.0 BDC.

Yep, I'm aware that we don't /have/ to do it, it's a
pure belt-n-braces
approach (we are virtualising our DCs, doing it the
way I described gives us
a virtual BDC to "mess with" should things
not go smoothly, with the view
that if we really can't get things going how we want,
the physical will come
back on line "as-is" - i.e. a last-resort.

Ah, very useful to know. So native/mixed mode etc. is
definitely ONLY about
DC replication. In that case, I see no reason why we
can't go native
immediately as we definitely will be getting shot of
BDCs right at the
start.
Thanks for the response...

Honestly, unless you're using SBS or Terminal
Services, the automatic
licensing services are buggy and aren't mandatory, so
I would just
stop/disable the underlying Windows service and keep
track of your licenses
manually. That's pretty standard practice.

Thanks for the reply. I wondered about this, I'm not
using either
service and
it appears to have allowed 5 users and a server
managed printer to be
on
at the same time, so I'm not even sure it's a problem.
It's just one
of
those kinda worry ya issues.

Hello Proscott,
Why don't you make a real fresh installation with
formatting the disks during

Why? What does that achieve?
Normally it is controlled by changing the power
management settings in the
BIOS, but I can't tell you how to do that because it
would vary on every
system.
