Since you deleted it 2 months ago, the probability of
getting it back
using data recovery software is slim-to-none.
Nevertheless, see the
general data recovery information below. After you get
this sorted, set
up and implement a backup strategy.
*****
If you use data recovery software, install it on
another machine and
either use it from that operating system or create a
bootable cd/floppy
and work with that. If you don't have the skill and/or
equipment to do
these procedures and the data is crucial, take the
machine to a
professional computer repair shop that has experience
in doing data
recovery. This will not be your local version of
BigStoreUSA. In-shop
data recovery is usually not exactly cheap (for ex.,
my charges are
generally $150-350USD), but it normally costs less
than sending the
drive to a company like Drive Savers. You need to make
the determination
of the value of your data and decide what to do.
Here are some links to various programs. I use Easy
Recovery Pro, but it
is expensive. People whom I respect have recommended
R-Studio and
Restoration. YMMV.

At this point - likely not! Too much time has passed,
and the likelihood
that the space occupied by the file has been over
written is very great.

Malke and Richard Urban have already answered your
question,
explaining that there is by now extremely little
chance of retrieving
it. I will just add my standard post on this subject,
to help you
understand why. Read the following for reference, not
as practical
advice as to what to do now:
"Deleting" a file doesn't actually delete
it; it just marks the space
as available to be used. There are third-party
programs that can
sometimes recover deleted files. The problem is that
the space used by
the file is likely to become overwritten very quickly,
and this makes
the file unrecoverable.
So your chances of successfully recovering this file
are decent if you
try recovering it immediately after deleting it, and
rapidly go
downhill from there. If you've been using the computer
since then (for
example to write this question and read this answer),
your chances are
probably very poor by now.
But if the file is important enough, it's worth a try
anyway. Stop
using the computer in question immediately, if you
haven't done so
already. Download an undelete program (here's one:
http://www3.telus.net/mikebike/RESTORATION.html but
there are several
others to choose from; do a Google search) on a
friend's computer and
bring it to yours on a floppy to try.
If this fails, your only other recourse is to take the
drive to a
professional file recovery company. This kind of
service is very
expensive and may or may not work in your case.

Where is the "lock desktop" function? Not
that it worked so well in XP, but
at least my desktop was arranged the way I intended. I
am 2 days into Vista
Ultimate on a brand new laptop - after switching to a
Mac and coming back to
PC. Now I find that my desktop items move around at
will while I am logged
on and not changing resolution. It's astonishing how
much useful
functionality is lost everytime Microsoft issues a new
operating system and
new Office products. Darn.

Hi, kellyk,
Right click on the desktop and select View,
Uncheck Auto Arrange,
click Align to grid
click Show Desktop Icons.
Drag your Icons to where you want them.
Have fun,

Thanks Jerry, but I had already configured it that way
(*not* to auto arrange
nor to sort by name, date or other). No options appear
relevant to setting
desktop items under "personalize" either.
This is a brand new Toshiba
laptop, so I would expect the video card and
resolution to be up to snuff.
Thanks for trying though.

I don't think there is a hard number for the amount of
sub-folders in a
folder. However, if you are creating folders within
the sub-folders you
could possibly run into the character limit for a file
name. I believe the
number is still 260 characters, including the path to
the file.

Oh. I see. Thanks for the information .
I only asked because when you import photos using
Windows Photo
Gallery, WPG automatically creates a dated folder for
the photos. Was
curious if eventually the Pictures folder would max
out. But it
doesn't sound as if that will happen.
Thanks!

Hi dean-dean,
I noticed these HKEY locations only contained 6 in one
and 7 in the
other of the personal user folders.
"Downloads" being the one not in
the "Shell Folders".
Do you know the HKEY locations for the other personal
user folders?
(Contact, Links, Saved Games, and Searches)
Thank you,
Shawn

Hi Shawn,
Well, yes, it's mysterious indeed. I'm not sure why
different shell folders
are listed in those keys in the registry, and why
others are not. All the
shell folders are listed here, as sub-keys:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\FolderDescriptions
I'm thinking that unless certain folders (such as
Contacts, Links, Saved
Games, and Searches) are moved by the user, then they
won't be listed in
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User
Shell Folders
and that the default locations are used. Why this is
true for some shell
folders and not others, I don't know.
Too, the Downloads folder is, by default, listed as
{374DE290-123F-4565-9164-39C4925E467B} in the
following key, and
doesn't necessarily have to be moved. If the Contacts
folder is moved,
however, its name is listed as
{56784854-C6CB-462B-8169-88E350ACB882}, but
otherwise, if not moved, it's not listed in
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User
Shell Folders.
I think that Links would show
{BFB9D5E0-C6A9-404C-B2B2-AE6DB6AF4968},
Searches would show
{7D1D3A04-DEBB-4115-95CF-2F29DA2920DA}, and Saved Games
would be {4C5C32FF-BB9D-43b0-B5B4-2D72E54EAAA4}, under
the Name value of
that key, with the user-defined new path under value
Data, should a user
change the folder's location from the default. For
Contacts, Links, Saved
Games, and Searches, therefore, I think that deleting
those Name values in
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User
Shell Folders
would restore the folders' default locations, should
their paths no longer
be valid for one reason or another. Or, one could just
change the path to a
valid location. I've only tested this by moving the
Contacts folder,
though, and not tried the others (further
fiddling|testing is required)...
:o)
In other words, say, a user moved Contacts to Drive G,
a removable drive.
Drive G is dropped on the floor, and destroyed. One
could buy another
removable drive, name it G, and run the command
shell:contacts, to create a
new Contacts folder on the new Drive G. Or, one could
skip buying a new
Drive, delete the Name value
{56784854-C6CB-462B-8169-88E350ACB882} in
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User
Shell Folders,
then run the command shell:contacts, and thereby
create a new, restored
Contacts folder in the default location, that is,
C:\Users\(User
Name)\Contacts. But, since it's now in the default
location, it won't be
listed in the above key. Such is the mysteriousness of
the Contacts folder,
at least...

dean-dean,
You gave me a lot to play with and test. This will be
very helpful.

Ok dean-dean,
Here is a strange one for you. I did some testing and
playing on this
with my personal user "Music" folder. I was
clicking the "Apply Actions"
for Windows Defender while doing this.
1. I changed the Target for the Music folder from my
C:\ HDD to the the
D:\ CD/DVD.
2. It was linked just fine with the DVD drive with the
DVD in it.
3. I took the the DVD out of the drive to simulate the
lost Target for
the Music folder.
4. The Music folder was then gone from the personal
folders list in the
Start menu as expected. I noticed it was listed in the
"Links" folder
for the DVD drive. This did not surprise me and made
sense.
5. I changed the location in the two HKEY locations
back to the default
location for the Music folder.
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell
Folders
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User
Shell Folders
6. I typed the Shell:My Music, but no luck. I logged
off and on, but
still no luck. The Music folder would not return back
to default. I had
to put the DVD back in the drive so the Music folder
would return. I
then changed the Target in the shortcut's Properties
back to the default
target path. It returned back to opening from the
default location
then.
What do you think? I am working on writing a tutorial
for this, but
this part is hanging me up. (haha)
Thank you for any ideas,
Shawn

How can I add 'Type' as a default detail for a picture
folder (and all
subfolders)?
Thanks,

Right-click on one of the column headers... select
"Type", or any of the
others.

Right-clicking and selecting 'Type' doesn't set it as
a default detail for
picture folders. It only changes the current folder. I
want to change all
present and future picture folders. There are dozens
of different details
available when you right-click and select 'More...'
I'd like customize the
picture folders, but there I have several thousand of
them and doing it
manually... I don't think so. There has to be a way of
editing the registry
or something to make the folder change global.

Here is a workaround for you.
You can add an option to the right click context menu
to register and
unregister DLL and OCX files. Copy the text between
the first dashed lines
and paste it into Notepad. Save the file as
regdll.reg.
Double click the file to merge it into the registry.
This will add a Register and Unregister item to the
right click context
menu, when you select a DLL file.
Perform the same steps for the text between the second
2 lines. Name this
file regocx.reg. This will add the same context menu
items when you right
click an ocx file.

Thanks for the info, but this still does not work for
me. I ran the reg
file and it said it ran successfully. I went into
regedit to confirm and the
entries are just as they should be in the paths as
defined in the file. But
I still get no additional options on the menu when
right clicking a dll.
Just the same Open and Open with... and the other
standard stuff. I
restarted to be sure, but still no difference. Any
guesses what the problem
is?
Assuming I can figure out what is up, can I assume
this should work for any
extension by running regxxx.reg where xxx is the file
extension I want to add
the options for? I have found several other cases
where I can't open a file
as I would like to with Vista's features.
Just out of curiousity, any idea why they would take
away that functionality
from previous versions to just let you go in and add
these options in the
Folder Options section? Seems like a pretty essential
and basic function
they've removed.
Thanks for your help,

That is strange, I have been using these right click
options for quiet
awhile and never had a problem?
The 'Register' and 'Unregister' menu items should
appear at the top of the
right click menu when used on a .dll or .ocx file.
I attached my ocxfile and dllfile registry keys to
this message (renamed
with the .txt extension) for comparison to your
registry keys.
To answer your second question, yes, you can tweak
these files to add other
file menu items. All of the standard registry warnings
apply, backup any
keys before applying changes to those keys. Also, make
sure you have a very
current system restore point.

Now I know that I will be in the right adress:
My software will make me believe that it is saving

The only caution I must have now is to not forget this

Turn off UAC (User Account Control) and vista will no
longer use the virtual
store folder but you will be less secure though. I
personally turn off UAC
all the time.

This is definitely not a good idea. Many legacy
programs will just silently
fail when they are not able to virtualize their
configuration files or
registry settings. In addition, turning off UAC also
disables Internet
Explorer Protect Mode.

Since nobody answers: XYplorer file manager can
preserve the Creation Date.
But note: this feature will only be present in the
coming up version 6.40!

Total Commander (File Manager Program) will allow you
to keep the original
creation dates - if YOU choose the option among it
hundreds of user
selectable preferences. By default, "it"
also uses the current date when
transferring files/folders.

Ronnie,
How is Vista Ultimate handling streaming vids? They
don't seem to be
getting saved in the temp folder cache. On my XP
machine they are saved to
the temp internet folder. On my Vista machine they
aren't. Do I need to
change a setting or is Vista handling them
differently?

Hi, P.
See PaulB's reply to the second copy of Moonwalker's
question, posted less
than an hour after his/her first one.
As Paul said, just press to see the Menu Bar
temporarily, or
right-click on the Toolbar to turn it on
(semi-)permanently.
On the same right-click menu, click Customize Command
Bar | Add or Remove
Commands... to add Cut, Copy, etc.

Hello,
sorry if I can't follow or if I mixed up something.
When I right-click my toolbar, I can't select to
customize it:

Were the buttons on the command toolbar meant? Or
something else?

Hi, Paolo.
Maybe it was I who mixed up something.
I think Moonwalker was asking about Windows Explorer -
and I gave the answer
for Internet Explorer 7. ;^{
I concur: In Windows Explorer in Vista, I see no way to
add icons to the
Toolbar. :>(
Moonwalker's second post - 50 minutes after the first
- specifically said,
"the Windows explorer toolbar", but the
first post (which I read second
because they were sorted by newest first) did not.
Sorry 'bout that.

Hi, tracy ... one thing about System Restore ... I am not an expert, but
I
think System Restore covers only operating system
files. I am not even sure
that it includes program files. But I am almost
positive that it does not
include your personal data files.
All your personal data files should be backed up to
CD, DVD or another hard
drive or USB flash drive regularly and you must
initiate this yourself using
simple drag and drop in Windows Explorer or by using a
backup program. There
is a simple backup program in Vista, I think, but I
have not used it nor
even looked for it yet.
When you found your missing files, did you do it
through a search or did you
just look through folders?
If you used the search function, the location of the
found files should be
in the search results window, showing where they were
found. Once you find
out where they are now, you can use Windows Explorer
to go to those folders
and then copy them back to where you want them to be.
Good luck ... I hope you get it all restored ...

It sounds like instead of learning about the new file
hierarchy in
Windows Vista you just started deleting stuff. Here is
a brief
description of the file hierarchy and junctions in Vista:
*****
From MVP Keith Miller - With Vista, you have a
UserName folder as you
did on XP. It is now found under 'C:\Users' rather
than 'C:\Documents
and Settings' (quite an improvement, I think). It has
subfolders named
AppData (normally hidden), Contacts, Documents,
Downloads, Favorites,
Links, Music, Pictures, Saved Games, Searches and
Videos.
Open a command prompt ?
folders I just mentioned. Now use the command 'dir
/al'.
You will see a listing of a file-system level
shortcuts known as a
Junctions. These are the icons with shortcut arrows
that you are
seeing. Their names correspond to the the old XP user
folder structure.
They "point' to the corresponding new user folder
in Vista. They are
created so that software that was coded with the XP
folder structure in
mind would be less likely to 'break'
*****
So you deleted all those system folders, yes? Try
recreating the special
folders as follows:
Click on the Start Orb>Search box and type:
shell:personal [enter]
A new Documents folder will be created, with the
hidden system
desktop.ini file inside it (which enables the special
icon). The
default location for the folder is
C:\Users\(Username)\Documents. This
works for Favorites and other system User folders such
as Music. For
example, you would type shell:music to get the music
folder back.
Hopefully that will work for you.
Then to organize your stuff in the future, simply save
your work in
either existing special folders (Music, Pictures, Documents,
etc.) in
your User account - C:\Users\Your-user-name - or make
new folders as you
like, but keep them in your User account. Back up your
files regularly
so if you decide to do "housekeeping" again
you will be able to restore
your data easily.

It sounds like you have a trial version of Office 2007
installed on the
computer. Go to Control Panel>Programs and Features
and uninstall it.
This should not affect your installed Office 2003.

You are looking for files that are either .exe, or
.txt etc? Use the OR
keyword {in capitals} to search for files matching any
one term in the

*.exe OR *.txt OR *.whatever

Hi Eric,
Are you able to open the Excel file by right clicking

Open With and selecting the Excel .exe program?

I have the same problem. I don't think the
abovementioned link gives any
solution. I have fully updated anti-virus software
(AVG) and disabling this
did not change anything. I have the same problem with
Word-files (Office
2003) as with Excel-files. In my case the problem was
first solved disabling
UAC.

I'm experiencing the same issue.
If I search my documents folder just on filename, for
example *.pdf,
it does not find anything even if I know that there is
several files
(I can see them!)
However, if I rename for example a .pdf file to .txt
and then rename
it back to .pdf again, it will be found!
I actually think that I'm experiencing this on two
computers, my home
computer as well as my work computer. The search is
just not finding
anything!
Does anyone know anything about this issue?

Good news I think, goto control panel type in the

click under indexing options change who windows

drive in modify (I also selected some of the folders
it excludes) I
think that may help it work better but maybe not.

Your solution works, many thanks!
Add the location in the indexing, waiting a long and
dull time till the
indexing finished. Vista will index all
files in the location, no progress
bar tell you how long it would take, just open the
indexing maintain sheet
and read the text. Only starting 'Search' from the
start menu or root
directories(C:\, D:\ etc.) can find the files.
I don't know why the search functionality designed
like this; it's damn
inconvenient for the user. I still think it’s a bug
for those non-indexing
files and those files under sub-directories.
Does anybody know how to report it to M$?

Hi Sergio,
You will need to change Vista's color scheme to
either "Windows
Standard" or "Windows Classic" to have
the +/- instead of the arrows.
This tutorial will show you how to do it.
