Hi, Rex.
For the Recycle Bin, right-click on any empty space on
your Desktop, then
Personalize | Change desktop icons.
For the built-in Defragmenter, there probably are
other (maybe better) ways;
search Help and Support for "defragment" for
help. But one way is to
right-click on your Desktop, then New | Shortcut, and
create a shortcut to
C:\Windows\System32\dfrgui.exe; name it whatever you
like, but "Defrag"
comes quickly to mind.
If you are using a third-party defragger, just change
the filename.

Hi Peter,
The Vista file backup utility stores your backed up
content as zip files in
your backup destination media. You should find them
under
your_computer_name\Backup Set xxxx-xx-xx\Backup Files
xxxx-xx-xx\Backup
files x.zip
Thanks,

I can't answer that, but one other thing you can try,
On the Start-Run line type: SFC /SCANNOW
OR
Press the windows key and the letter R, to bring up
the RUN line,
Type: SFC /SCANNOW
This will replace any corrupt or missing files.

Hi MrMusic,
If you are renaming files or folders outside of the

You can turn UAC off if you like. This tutorial will

sure to read the Warning at the top.

Rosie,
Control panel
Under programs, Uninstall a program
Also in general the Vista help system often actually
has good help (in
contrast to the XP help).
Asking 'Uninstall a program' in the search help field
would actually get you
a good answer.

Your best bet is to attempt to get everything back
from the FLASH drive.
This is almost certainly a FAT drive. If you haven't
taken new photos the
old ones should still be there, and even if you
formatted the drives the
images should be recoverable. You will have a much
better chance with the
flash drive than the hard disk, where the files will
almost certainly have
been overwritten already, even if you aren't using the
machine.

Re: Recent Items not updating
Date:
09/16/2007 16:06:54
Well, I finally solved my problem with the help of
some of dean-dean's
advice. Just to recap my problem, I could log in as
the Admin. and the
"Recent Items" would update whenever a file
is opened. However, when
I'm logged in under a standard user ID the Recent
Items area would not
update.
By looking at the registry as defined earlier in this
thread, my
"Recent Items" for standard users was
pointing to a shortcut located in
the C:\User\(your name) directory. I could not
determine where the
shortcut was pointing because if I attempted to open
it's properties I
was denied access because I "didn't have
permission" (even if I was
logged in as the Admin.). So taking the advice of dean-dean
earlier in
this thread I deleted the shortcut file and entered
the SHELL:RECENT
command in the "Start Search" area of the
START menu to create the
special file required for the Recent Items area. This
apparently worked
because the Recent Items window opened.
I then went to the START menu but did not see the
"Recent Items" menu
item, so taking another of dean-dean's suggestions I
opened the
"properties" area of the START button and
cleared the checks on the
following:
"Store and display a list of recently opened
files..."
"Store and display a list of recently opened
program..."
I performed a restart, logged back into my standard
user ID (not my
Admin. ID), and opened the properties area of the
START button again. I
reselected the two items above (replaced the checks
for each item) and
clicked APPLY. My Recent Items area now works
properly, recording any
files that are opened.
Thanks dean-dean for all your help and I hope my
narative here helps
others to solve their problem as well.

If these files are being written to the C:\Program
Files\Matlab folder, it's
likely that they are being virtualized by Vista.
Open that folder in Windows Explorer and look for a
"Compatibility Files"
button on the Command Bar. Click this button and you
should be taken to the
folder where the files have been saved. The location
should be:
C:\Users\your name\AppData\Local\Virtual Store\Program
Files\Matlab folder.

The Program Files folder is heavily restricted in
Vista. You should be
saving the files somewhere in the users folder for the
account you are
logged on with. If you want the files to be available
to other users, save
them somewhere in the Public folder.

Vista comes with Roxio 9 basic. It is not always
compatible with the Roxio
programs you paid for such as Roxio Easy CD Creator 8
(for example).
What I did was to delete the basic rox 9 and install
the full version of 8
on my vista machine. It worked.

I have the exact same problem in Windows Vista
Enterprise.
Furthermore, Sometimes it stops in the middle of the
move process without
moving all the files and/or folders and it's still
taking too long to move
the files even after the Vista update.

Is the question "Should the folder and its
contents be moved into a folder
of the same name, or should Vista recognize that it is
the same name and
assume that the user only wants to move the contents

Good question. For me, if I try to move a folder to a
destination that
already contains the folder with the same name that I
want to merge both the
folder and it's contents.
Interestingly, Vista offers an additional option to
merge the source folder
if this folder is at the same level as the target.
Please consider the following:
1) Start Menu/DivX to Start Menu/Development
Tools/DivX
2) Start Menu/Development Tools/DivX to Start
Menu/Graphics/DivX
In example 1 you get the scenario outlined below. In
example 2, Vista offers
an additional option (message) after moving the files,
to merge the folder
(DivX) - BUT, it stil leaves the now empty folder in
it's original location.

Try changing the drive letters back to the way they
were originally, then go
the special user folders on F: and right-click each
one, choosing
Properties. On the Location tab, click on Restore
Default. This should put
the location of the folders under C:\Users\(Your
Name). Then change the
drive letters as you want them, and then move the
special folders back to
where you want them...

Hi Mullin,
First, try putting the drive letters back the way they
were and change
the location for the personal folders back to
C:\users\(your username)"
(no quotes). Change the drives, then change the
folders.
ALSO,
You can try using the Shell command to see if you
locate and open them.
You can then change them to the correct locations. See
this tutorial for
how to use it.
http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/91188-shell-command.html
Shell commands for your user folders:
1. shell:Contacts
2. shell:desktop
3. shell:downloads
4. shell:Favorites
5. shell:SavedGames
6. shell:Links
7. shell:My Music
8. shell:My Pictures
9. shell:My Video
10. shell:Searches
11. shell:Personal (Documents folder)
If this is a no go, then you might try copying from or
recreating the
folder in "C:\Users\(your username)" and add
the desktop.ini for that
specific folder. You can use this tutorial as a guide.
http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/90705-personal-user-shell-folders.html
Hope this helps,

Hi Luke,
You can do this from your Vista installation DVD. Just
do a "Custom
(advanced)" install and click "Drive options
(advanced)". The "Create"
option will create a new partition and allow you to
adjust it's size.

Any one you pay for would do the job most likely.
Acronis Disk Director
Suite 10.0 is a fine program and is 100% Vista
compatible.

Hi, Luke.
Every Windows since Windows 2000 has included Disk
Management
(diskmgmt.msc), which can do almost any partitioning
job that you need.
Windows XP added more functions to DM and Vista added
even more.
Of course, this doesn't do you much good if you are
trying to partition the
system or boot drive you are running at the moment.
But if you are
dual-booting or using multiple physical drives, be
sure to look at what you
already have before deciding to purchase something.

Hi Luke,
Take a look at these two tutorials for how to use Disk
Management in
Vista.
To add another partition:
http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/95398-disk-management-shrink-partition.html
To delete a partition and extend another partition to
make it bigger:
http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/95418-disk-management-delete-extend.html
Hope these help,

OK, how are you trying to create the folders?
Right-click? What happens
when you try? Any error messages? I ask because if you
can't use the
right-click option then perhaps you've got a
third-party context menu
entry causing issues. Run ShellExView as Administrator
and see if
disabling third-party context menu entries helps.
http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/shexview.html
Or maybe this is your issue?
"Folder" entry missing from the
"New" menu in Windows Vista -
http://www.winhelponline.com/articles/214/1/
The root of a drive - ex. C:\ - is protected and that
may be why you
can't do anything there. Can you create folders in
your own User account?
Were you ever able to create folders? If yes, what
changed?
And as "JackLondon" asked, are you doing
this from a Standard or
Administrator user account? Is this a standalone
machine (i.e., not on a
domain)?
The reason I'm asking you all these questions is
because I can't see
your computer from here and I'm trying to narrow down
the
troubleshooting for you.

You should be able to simply insert a CD-RW disk in
the drive, drag and drop
the file to the CD-RW drive and this will start the

not, click the Burn button on the Command Bar.

Do NOT touch the My Documents folder it is not a real
folder it is special.
In Vista the directory you want is just Documents.
If you want your documents to be on the D Drive you
can, however there seem
to be a lot of people that have regretted such a move
with multiple
directories all over the place and difficulties for
some programs to find
files. Given that:
Login as the user you want to affect.
now right click the Documents directory
select properties
now the Location tab
It probably shows C:\Users\yourname\Documents
Name a place where you want the documents actually
stored. DO NOT simply say
D:.
Something such as D:\yourname\Documents could be a
choice.
Now select the Move button.
Pay attention the any warnings, if it seems to
recommend that you not do
this for some reason cancel the process and get back
here with what it seems
upset about and perhaps someone can advise.

If the Documents folder no longer has the 'Location'
tab then there have
possible been changes made to the registry or the
documents have already
been moved. In either case the solution is beyond by
experience.

You can enable the old style menu bar temporarily in
Windows Explorer by
simply pressing the ALT key. You can enable them
permanently by selecting
Organize/Layout and selecting the Menu Bar option.

RE: Memory leak when copying large numbers of files
Date:

Dear Jones,
Thank you for posting here.
After conducting a lot of research as well as
confirming with the
Development team member, we found that this is a known
issue in Windows
Vista which has been filed and are also currently
being investigated.
Considering the current status, we can first take the
following steps to
see if it is helpful
1. Install the latest Updates
--------------------------------
Please download and install the update KB938979 from
the following KB
article:
An update is available that improves the performance
and reliability of
Windows Vista
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;938979
2. Clean boot the Vista machine
--------------------------------
1. Click the Start Button type "msconfig"
(without quotation marks) in the
Start Search box, and then press Enter.
Note: If prompted, please click Continue on the User
Account Control (UAC)
window.
2. Click the "Services" tab, check the
"Hide All Microsoft Services" box
and click "Disable All" (if it is not gray).
3. Click the "Startup" tab, click
"Disable All" and click "OK".
Then, restart the computer. When the "System
Configuration Utility" window
appears, please check the "Don't show this
message or launch the System
Configuration Utility when Windows starts" box
and click OK.
Please test this issue in the Clean Boot environment.
If the issue still
persists, we can try to use the XCOPY command to the
issue again:
3. Use the XCOPY command to copy the files
--------------------------------
1. Click Start, type: CMD and then right click on the
CMD in the list and
then select Run as Administrator.
2. In the command prompt, please run the following
command and then press
Enter to copy the files
XCOPY
If we are able to copy the files successfully via the
XCOPY command, I
suggest we temporarily use this method as a workaround
until the real fix
is released. Thank you for your understanding and
cooperation. If anything
is unclear in my post, please don't hesitate to let me
know.
Have a nice day!

| Hello!
| When trying to copy large numbers of files

| The size of the explorer.exe process keeps growing

Wow, even XCOPY leads to an out-of-memory error
message after a short while.
Scary.
After many painful reboots and recounting of files I
have managed to move
the files with Explorer for now. Always when the
number of files that have
been copied since the last reboot growth too large,
things stop working
correctly: windows don't open, icons break, the
registry seems to be
inaccessible etc., in short the system seems to be out
of resources. I hope
that this will be fixed soon as I have to move similar
amounts of files
regularly.
If you/the developers need more info, please say so.
Best regards

Re: Memory leak when copying large numbers of files

Dear Jones,
Thank you for your feedback.
According to the all the information given, it appears
that the system is
running out of resource when or after copying the
files onto the local hard
drive.
Considering the current situation, let's first do a
check disk and then
launch the "Reliability and Performance
Monitor" program in Vista when the
system is running out of resource
1. Enter the Windows Vista Recovery Environment
(WINRE) and then run the
CHKDSK /R to force a disk check.
2. Enter the normal mode, click Start, type:
"Reliability and Performance
Monitor" in the Start Search bar.
3. Launch the "Reliability and Performance
Monitor" program and then check
the problem again via this tool.
In addition, I have also performed further research.
When you need to copy
a large number files again next time, I also suggest
we manually increase
the number of system page table entries that are
reserved for mapping I/O
buffers to test if it helps.
NOTE: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause
serious problems that may
require you to reinstall Windows. Microsoft cannot
guarantee that problems
resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor
can be solved. Use
Registry Editor at your own risk.
256986 Description of the Microsoft Windows Registry
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=256986
1. Click Start, type: REGEDIT in the Start Search bar
and then press Enter.
2. Open the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session
Manager\Memory
Management
3. Make the following change
"SystemPages"=dword:ffffffff
4. Exit and reboot the computer.
NOTE: This registry entry defines the number of system
page table entries
that are reserved for mapping I/O buffers and other information
into the
system address space. Each system page table entry
maps one page.
Have a nice day!

things stop working
| correctly: windows don't open, icons break, the
registry seems to be
| inaccessible etc., in short the system seems to be
out of resources. I
hope
| that this will be fixed soon as I have to move
similar amounts of files
| regularly.
| If you/the developers need more info, please say so.
