Go to http://home.eunet.no/~pnordahl/ntpasswd/ . There you will find

zip files that will let you create boot floppy disks or bootable CDs

that will enable you to reset any system password on an NT class

Click the start orb and then "Help and Support." In the search field, type

in: lost password and press Enter. A page will appear explaining how to

reset the password. You'll also want to check the "what are the risks of

resetting a password?" in the "See also:" section at the bottom of that

page.

This is a bit long winded, but it is a simple process.

The only way you can do this, if you did not create a password reset disk

when you created the password, is to remove the password for your account

when logged in with another administrator account.

The easiest way to do this is to temporarily enable the Built-in

Administrator account and remove the password on your administrator account.

Follow these steps.

Go to Start and type: cmd.exe In the Results, right click the Cmd.exe

program and select the Run As Administrator option.

In the command window, copy / paste the following command:

net user administrator /active:yes

Press Enter. You should see a message that the command was successful. This

will place the built-in administrator account on the login screen.

Next, go to Start and click the arrow to the right of the lock computer

button. In that menu, click Switch User. When the login screen appears click

the built-in Administrator account and log on.

Go to Control Panel / User Accounts. Select Manage Another Account. Select

your administrator account and then click the Remove Password option. Click

the Remove Password button.

Now go back to the same boot menu and this time select the Log Off item. On

the login screen, select your administrator account.

Once you are logged on, use the same steps to open the administrator command

prompt and use the same command, only this time change the "yes" to "no".

This will hide the built-in administrator account again.

Open Control Panel / User Accounts, select your administrator account and

create a new password. This time, create a Password Reset Disk that you can

use if you ever forget your password again.

I found this post and tried to follow these instructions. Can't believe I

forgot my admin password, and now can't access my account. Your fix sounds

simple so I tried it but I do not have the option of selecting users and

group option after I go into computer management. I have Windows Vista. Any

ideas?

The reason you cannot get to "users and groups" is probably because you have

the Home Basic or Home Premium version of Vista. That component is not

available in those 2 versions. You need to do the following instead.

This is a bit long winded, but it is a simple process.

The only way you can do this, if you did not create a password reset disk

when you created the password, is to remove the password for your account

when logged in with another administrator account.

I don't know what your problem is with bird names, but you should not bark

up the wrong tree with respect to the 'read only' attribute of folders.

Folders are not read only (or not read only) note that the square is filled

in, not empty or checked. The attribute read-only does not apply to a

folder.

When you look at any folder it will have the read-only box filled in. The

contents (that is files) of a folder may of course be read only.

If you have a folder with the box checked (not just filled in) do get back

and I will have to eat crow (would really like to know its path and name).

Thanks for that information, Michael - what about the files within the

Are you using a program called ALZip?

From

http://www.altools.net/Portals/0/support/alzip/ALZip_6/zip_etc_02_context_menu_right_click.htm :

"Simply click New folder to create one ('directory' and 'folder' refer to

the same thing). The default folder name will be a species of bird. New

folder functions the same as New --> Folder in Windows Explorer. Using the

ALZip New folder function is simply much faster and more convenient than the

traditional Windows Explorer option - one click as opposed to clicking,

repositioning your cursor, and waiting for a flyout menu."

You may want to turn off the New Folder optiop in ALZip's Preferences, if

possible...

Gina,

Files can have the read-only attribute. To change the attribute however you

must have permissions to do so.

In general files created under C:\users\name\documents (note: not 'My

Documents') should inherit the permissions from c:\users\name and should

give you full control over those files, including permission to modify the

write only attribute.

When you try to change the attribute of a file and it doesn't work do you

get any error message?

You can check permissions on a file in question by right click, select

properties, then the security tab. Highlight your name.

The security properties should be grey checks and include 'full control'.

If not check to see who is the owner of the file by clicking 'advanced'

button, then owner tab, the 'current owner' should be you. If some other

owner then get back and perhaps there can be some more assistance. (It would

help to know the name of the file, and current owner)

Also check the ownership of the Documents folder.

Michael,

I was able to solve some of the problems, but I'm still coming across a

particular directory that won't allow me to make new folders inside of it.

When I click on New Folder, nothing happens at all. No error message, nothing

at all happens. Must be some weird glitch with this particular directory I

guess.

McFingers

What you are describing is not possible in Vista?

If you are logged on with a Standard account and attempt to access any part

of Control Panel/User Accounts where you can create a new account or even

change a current account, you must elevate that process using an

administrator account credentials.

There are only 2 settings possible for a Standard account in Vista when

starting a process that requires elevation to administrator privileges.

1. Prompt for administrator privileges where an administrator account and

password must be entered.

2. Deny any elevation.

Even if UAC is turned off and you try to create or change a user account,

(or any other task that requires administrator privileges) you may actually

be able to go through the process, but the changes will silently fail to

take effect. A new administrator user account will not be created and any

changes to any current account (such as changing a standard user to an

administrator account) will fail to take effect.

You can create a new user profile and grant him administrator permissions

with your current account.

After that copy all the profile content from piperdy to your new account

profile. Finally, you can delete piperdy account from the system.

Hello,

the "Windows Explorer has stopped working" problem is very common. Have you

installed all latest updates?

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/938979

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/938194

They may help. Have you done a thorough malware and virus check? Do that if

it doesn't help.

It's a very tricky error, so it may not be solved in the near future.

Have you got a system restore point?

Greetings,

P. Di Stolfo

Select folders and apply add yourself as owner. That *should* "trickle

down" to the files within the folders.

If not, open a folder to expose the files. Then click in the portion of the

window where the files are listed and press Ctrl+A or Alt+Edit+Select All.

Next right click on the selected batch of files and use the communal

Properties sheet that will appear to change permissions.

This appears to be a conflict with a system that has a fingerprint reader

and the Omnipass software installed. If this applies to your system, here is

what others have done to resolve the problem.

You need to uninstall Omnipass from the Programs and Features applet in

Control Panel and then re-install the Omnipass software.

You may need to contact the computer maker for instructions on re-installing

the Omnipass software.

Have you tried just downloading it directly from the Windows Live Messenger

Site?

go to uk.msn.com and click "Messenger" then click download , when the dialog

box comes up click "Save" let it save. Then to install run the executable

(.exe) on the drive.

If this doesnt work, try ideas.live.com to download a BETA version of

I got double icons, 2 for standard and 2 for admin after Windows Home and

If I were you, I would tell Lenovo that either they give you a way to fix

the computer they sold you or they can take it back and refund your money.

Softex may make the software, but Lenovo installed it and set it up.

I called Lenovo and it is Softex software. IBM said I could send computer

back to them and they would restore it to original factory condition. I

really do not want to do that. What do you think? Is this that big of a

deal? I have learned a lot from this site and I am going to uninstall the

many trial programs I have to see if that makes a difference.

I read that this was caused by a conflict with Norton and a Windows update.

The solution is to uninstall and re-install the Softex (Omnipass) software.

First, of course, make sure you have the Softex install program on your

restore disk. Mine was under the driver directory, fingerprint software.

Second, backup your Omnipass profile so you can restore it after

reinstallation. This is accessed through the Enrollment Wizard.

Worked for me.

administrator is a user account and/or account status on a computer, not

a computer role.

both machines will have administrator accounts!

unless one of you is purposefully controlling the other pc its

illogical either of you would do damage to the other, and given your

knowledge of the situation it is pretty safe to say you aint doing

this.

what it sounds like has happened is maybe on the xp machine you're

running a user account with standard user credentials. go into control

panel/user accounts and change they account type. if you find you can't

it maybe necessary to boot into safe mode to run as administrator

(assuming your on xp home and you don't know what the administrator

account is named) and change the state of the xp accounts from within

there - to get to safe mode press F8 on after restarting your machine

and befroe the "knight rider" splash screen pops up.

Having this same issue. Started three day's ago and i haven't installed

anything new or made any changes. I can't even use my HP scanning program

because everything is red x's. I have Vista Ultimate and my rig is custom

built by me. Firefox works though but it runs like crap. Maybe this is some

new kind of virus that affects Vista users. If i run IE7 as admin it will

work for some thing's but it still messes up on some sites forcing me to use

Firefox.

Brendan,

This is a Windows Vista newsgroup, your problem is Windows XP related.

Please try and post to one of the XP groups.

As an aside you could try and perform a repair install with your XP CD (just

boot from it and choose the repair option).

You should probably stay clear of dodgy third party products such as

"BartPE" etc.

If you've powered it off, then someone must be powering it on. I have a bios

level password on mine so that even if they power it on, they can't get into

the programs. My company's IT staff does maintenance (loading new virus

definitions and security updates, etc.) Could something like this be

happening? Finally, you can look at your task scheduler to see if you've got

a setting to wake the computer for the task (only applicable if you're

hibernating the computer, not powering it off).

Are you powering off or placing the system into one of the sleep states? Be

sure about what's happening. In Power Management/Power Plans, the power

button for a laptop can be configured to alternatives other than "power

off."

Hello,

You can check wake history to see if there is something waking the machine

up and what it was.

open an elevated cmd prompt and run:

powercfg /lastwake

Reports information about what woke the system from the last sleep

transition

If you have been reconfiguring the security setting with gpedit the standard

way my no longer work but this is the normal way to do it.

Start Orb

in the search box type

cmd

at the top of the search results will be programs with an entry

cmd

right click the entry, select run as administrator

do your ipconfig operations

Another victim of computerspeak :(

The Blue circle with the windows flag in it at the lower left of the screen.

Called start orb (at least by some) because it is an orb and when you hover

the sursor over it is says start.

Michael,

Why do you have to do a run as when you are logged on as an administrator?

Clicking on the Orb/Start key then typing cmd in the search box takes me

straight to the command line, it does not give me any options to choose from

as you wrote.

Thanks again,

Running cmd with elevated privileges allows the user to do dangerous thing

to the system you can mess up such that you need to reinstall. Because it is

so dangerous Vista requires the user to explicitly request the elevation of

privileges.

Don't hit the Carriage return after typing in

cmd

Instead right click on the highlighted cmd.exe line under the first section

titled Programs.

It is here that you have the option to run elevated. The second line in the

fly out from right clicking will have a shield and say 'Run as

Administrator' left click that. You will be asked to confirm you want to do

this. Continue. Cmd will now run with elevated privileges.

If you enter chkdsk /f in Vista (using elevated privileges), all you have to

do is restart the machine.

DON'T press F8! After you see the green status bar + "Microsoft Corporation"

at the bottom of your screen, Checkdisk will start automatically.

Click on start -> Acessories then right click "Command Prompt" and choose

"Run as administrator" -> accept the UAC prompt by clicking ok or entering

your password. -> at the prompt type "chkdsk /f" (without the quotes) and

when prompted to run at next reboot type Y and press enter. after that,

simply close the command prompt, and reboot your computer normally (do not

try to run safe mode!) this should allow chkds to run normally on startup.

Turning off UAC would be a bad idea since it could leave your system

vulnerable. I would uninstall and reinstall Firefox to see if that repairs

the problem.

Hi Ronnie,

I'm having a similar problem with administrator privileges. When I try to

change the automatic update settings from Start --> Control Panel --> Windows

Update --> Change settings , the options for "Install updates automatically,"

"Download updates but let me choose whether to install them," "Check for

updates but let me choose whether to download and install them," and "Never

check for updates" are all grayed out. There is a yellow information bar at

the top saying "Some settings are managed by your system administrator" with

a link to "more information," but all it says in effect is to contact the

system administrator. I am the administrator and the only user on this

computer; what is preventing me from being able to change the automatic

update settings? Thanks!

Hi Steve,

You might try booting into Safe Mode, and then try deleting the user

account. This tutorial will show you how to get into Safe Mode if you

need it.

if you're using vista neither of these options should b necessary - just

stay in your usual user accounts which are by default restricted

permission based, but with the option to always be able to elevate

priveleges when necessary.

by default in vista the "administrator" account is disabled, and guest

account don't exist, nowt wrong with that so far. This deosn't mean you

can't do administrator things though, the first account created on the

computer behaves like an administrator account, but even an

administrator account on vista runs as a standard account until

administrator access is required.

the thing with vista is its a bit of a cultural leap in using your

windows OS which i think you're not understanding hence its becoming

incredibly frustrating for you.

when a piece of software is requiring administrator access for whatever

reason, you will be prompted to give the software elevated permissions.

same if you access a part of the control panel which a standard account

doesn't by default have permission to use.

microsoft have mave made these changes, called User Account Control, to

help with the security of your computer whilst you go about your day to

day work. half the problem with xp and previous windows was the fact

everyone just ran as administrator which left your computer extremely

vulnerable to all sorts of viruses and various malware.

I've found a few links for you which should help explain things better,

and how you should go about making the most of this extra protection for

your computer:

http://www.maximumpcguides.com/windows-vista-user-account-control-uac-explained/

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/windowsvista/features/details/useraccountcontrol.mspx

http://thepodest.blogs.keznews.com/2007/06/01/user-account-control-in-vistauac-explained/

my advice is to read up a little bit on it, relax and don't panic about

this. after a while it will become second nature to use your pc in this

way.

1. Type CMD into the start/search box, then right-click the CMD entry in the

Start menu and choose 'Run as administrator'. From the prompt type CD

%userprofile%\Desktop and press Enter, now type del name (where name is the

file to be removed, e.g. abc.def) and press Enter. This should remove the

file. If it does not, then keep the command prompt open and

2. Hit Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager. On the Processes Tab, select the

explorer.exe process and end it to stop the desktop. Go back to the command

prompt window and retry the del command. Now go to the Application Tab of

Task Manager and pick 'new task'. Enter explorer.exe and click 'OK' to

restart the desktop.

To get the CMD prompt, I should have said "Click Start > All Programs >

So you rushed out and bought a computer with the newest and shiniest OS

without taking a few minutes to determine:

a. If you really needed a new operating system,

b. If the new operating system would or could meet your computing needs

and desires,

c. And whether or not all of the 3rd party applications that you

already owned or used were Vista-compatible, or could be made so be a

patch or update from each programs' respective manufacturer.

> ...anyone have an answer?

Answer to what, precisely? Your problems, by your own description,

stem entirely from your unwillingness (or inability) to make an informed

purchasing decision, and the inactions of manufacturers/providers of 3rd

party games. Only they can fix their products.

If you're refering to the question misplaced in the subject line, yes,

you can remove Vista and install WinXP, if you like. It is your

computer, after all.

There could be a couple possible adverse repercussions, however.

First and foremost, if the specific computer model in question was

designed specifically for Vista, there may well be no WinXP-specific

device drivers available to make the computer's diverse components work

properly. Consult the computer's manufacturer about the availability of

device drivers. Secondly, removing an OEM-installed operating system

and replacing with another will almost invariably void any and all

support agreements and, sometimes, even the warranty. You would, at the

very least, have to re-install Vista before getting any support from the

manufacturer. Again, consult the computer's manufacturer for specifics.

Thirdly, there will be the additional cost involved in purchasing a

WinXP license for this new computer.

You should return the computer to the seller and exchange it for

one with WinXP, if possible.

Dear Bruce, most gaming sites/ games in general will have a area for spec's

of the game. Such as what processor, OS, Memory, Hard disc, Video card, sound

Try This: If you downloaded the game software, find where it is located

and select the properties of each application file, then select the

compatibility tab and change compatibility mode to run the program as

Windows XP. This worked for me for certain zone games.

I may be missing something on this page:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/windowsvista/features/details/calendar.mspx

But it looks to me as if you need to subscribe to each other's calendar.

This allows you to overlay one calendar over the other with different

colors for each person's appointments. You won't be able to change the

other person's calendar but will be able to see conflicting appointments

and then amend your own calendar accordingly. If there is an important

event, send an email invitation so your wife can add it to her calendar

(and she can send invitations to you as well). I think invitations is about

as close as you're going to get to "amending" each others calendars.

Someone else may have a better idea, but at least the above is possible

according to the feature description of this portion of Vista.

Sharon F,

Appreciate that, and in fact that's the stage I'm at. I just feel that

there must be another option as when trying to amend or add an entry to the

opposite calendar, it reports that I didn't have permission to do so.

Implying that if the permissions were changed then i might have been able to.

Both are admin accounts and I can't find anywhere to affect any

permissions....

But thanks...
