Case Study - Event ID 1029 - The service principal name for the VMRC server could not be registered.

Situation: The client has been using Auto-start VM in a Virtual Server for a few months. Recently, the auto-start VM doesn't work with the Event ID 1029 - The service principal name for the VMRC server could not be registered. Automatic authentication will always use NTLM authentication. Error 0x80072098 - Insufficient access rights to perform the operation.

Troubleshooting:

1. If you open VM General Configuration, you will find the configuration has been cahnged to "When Virtual Server starts: Never automaticallyturn on virtual machine" Figure 1.

2. If you click the General properties, you will see the password is blank (instead of ********) Figure 2.

Analysis and solution: It seems to us the password is incorrect. We found the client just changed the password a few days ago. After he re-enters the password and restart the Virtual Server service, the auto-start VM works fine.
