Case Study – NDR:
#5.4.0 - The destination server for this recipient could not be found
in Domain Name Service (DNS)
Situation: The client just
installed SBS 2003 and FQDN is server.chicagotech.local. He uses
dyndns.org to create MX pointing to mail.chicagotech.net. Since he
doesn't have a router, he uses the SBS as RRAS with NAT enabled. He
can send email out but not receive from outside. The internal email
works. The outside sender may receive this NDR: 5.4.0: The following
recipient(s) could not be reached: BobLin@chicagotehc.net on 8/15/2005 7:46
AM
The destination server for this recipient could not be found in
Domain Name Service (DNS). Please verify the email address and retry.
If that fails, contact your administrator. <mail.ms-mvps.net
#5.4.0>.
Troubleshooting:
- NAT has
opened SMTP port.
- Telnet port

Analysis:
after studying all information
carefully, we find the
BobLin@chicagoteHC.net doesn’t matches the real domain name
BobLin@chicagoteCH.net. To confirm that, we open Exchange System
Manager>ChicagoTech>Server>servername>Protocol>HTPP>Exchange Virtual
Server. Right-click on Exchange and select Properties. It displays
ChicagoTehc.net instead of ChicagoTech.net. (Note: you can’t change
the name there and it is grayed out).
Solution:
run SBS Connect to the Internet Wizard to change the name.
