Can't access host name with VPN connection - Resolution with screenshots

Q: We are running Windows Server 2012 Essentials with Anywhere Access enabled. The VPN clients can establish the VPN. However, we must use FQDN to access the server or any network computers and host name or NetBIOS name doesn't work.  Here is the nslookup example, the host name doesn’t work and FQDN works.

C:\Windows\system32>nslookup

Default Server: w2012e.chicagotech.local
Address: 192.168.10.6
> w2012e
Server: w2012e.chicagotech.local
Address: 192.168.10.6
*** w2012e.chicagotech.local
can't find w2012e: Non-existent domain
> w2012e.chicagotech.local
Server: w2012e.chicagotech.local
Address: 192.168.10.6
Name: w2012e.chicagotech.local
Addresses: 192.168.10.6 192.168.10.23.

Can we use the hostname instead of FQDN to access the server?

A: Yes, you can. What you need to do is adding DNS suffix to the VPN connection. To do that, please follow these steps:

1. Open the Properties of VPN

2. Click the “Networking” tab.

3. Double click the “Internet Protocol Version 4(TCP/IPv4)”

4. Click the “Advanced” button

5. Enter the suffix into the “DNS suffix for this connection” box

6. Click all OKs to save the settigns.
