VPN error 800 - a connection between your computer and the VPN server has been established but the VPN connection cannot be completed

Q: Hi there
I have a windows 2003 server running VPN.  I'm using a Linksys WRT54G router dishing out the DHCP.  The router has ports 1723 and GRE 47 open.   When a remote tried to connect, it gets to the authentication very user and password and then i get the following  Error 806: a connection between your computer and the VPN server has been established but the VPN connection cannot be completed.  The most common cause for this is that there is at least one internet device between your computer and the VPN server is not configured to allow GRE protocol packets Verify that protocol 47 GRE is allowed on all personal firewall devices or routers.  If the problem persists, contact your administrator.

The user has the dialup option set to allow VPN connections.

Any ideas?

A: In most cases, this is GRE or IP protocol 47 issue. All the data crossing the link is encrypted then encapsulated with a GRE header. If GRE traffic is blocked, no data is transferred and the connection closes. That is why you get through the authentication very user and password but end with error 806. However, since WRT54G is VPN pass through router, you should not need to open the IP 47 yourself. You may try to upgrade the firmware. This link may help,
