Accessing the Internet is low while connecting to a VPN

Q: Why is surfing the internet while connected to the VPN is noticeably slow. I thought by default, internet traffic is suppose to pass through.

A: When you check the 'Use remote default gateway' on your client connected, all traffic gets routed through the VPN connection and hence it is comparatively slow....
